In the early days many clubs merged.

Hotham
Brighton
West Melbourne
Essendon Town
Fitzroy

I am sure theres many more which the experts here will tell us about.

I am sure a few more merged at some staged.

PROPOSED VFL/VFA MERGERS

Fitzroy and Footscray 1989

Without doubt one of biggest of the proposed mergers.

The VFL basically had this one over the line. But didn't expect the resilience of the scray supporters.

A book was written about this merger and is a very good read

1996 Fitzroy and North Melbourne

This merger never happened but given more time I think would have.

1996 Hawthorn and Melbourne
Melbourne Members voted for this merger to happen. It never eventuated was very close to happening but.

I'm sure I've missed lots.

Mero can you please upload the proposed jumpers for the mergers.

While North Melbourne were known as Hotham (1877-1888) they never merged with any club.

Interesting one from the 90s.

Carlton were possibly the only club actively seeking a merger in the 90s

Elliott had his eye on North for a long time I think, early days they attempted what was basically a hostile takeover.

He said North were open to exploring it in the mid to late 90s but the thought was both teams were too strong and the other clubs would never allow it.

North Melbourne (the suburb) used to be called Hotham.
Hotham didn't merge with anyone.
They just changed their name to reflect where they were from.
Once named North Melbourne they later merged with/took over West Melbourne and later Essendon Town/Essendon A.

You could argue University merged with Melbourne, because Melbourne took over all their players (that we any good) and some of their administrators, and Uni stopped playing completely, re-forming a few years later back in what is today called the VAFA.

Britannia was the forerunner to Collingwood and did have links to Fitzroy although I'm not sure how strong the links were.
