The most ignored stat in the AFL - Nathan Fyfes disposal efficiency

I love Fyfe, would be in the top handful of guys I'd love at the Hawks. He had a great game against us this year where he won a bunch of clearances and just keep beating Mitchell for it in the middle. But I will say that since this sort of thing started getting brought up here I couldn't help but pay more attention to his kicking, and he misses way too many targets. Even easy targets when he is under minimal pressure. Would still love to have him at the Hawks though.

Disposal efficiency is a distorted statistic. It's heavily influenced by three things.

Where you get the ball. If you get the ball in the forward half, especially kicking it inside 50 you will have a lower than deserving disposal efficiency. easier to hit targets coming out of defence than it is going inside forward 50.

How you get the ball. Play close to the ruckmen and get tagged and a lot of your disposals are under pressure. A lot of kicks that are just banged long out of a pack. Contested possession winners have a low disposal efficiency.

The players around you and game style. If the players around you are no good and your targets are poor then this will effect your disposal efficiency though this is not always the problem for Fyfe. Their game style however is very defensive and the free flowing up the middle game where it's easier to hit targets is not their thing, they'd rather go wide and go to contests which effects disposal efficiency.

While Fyfe could be a better kick there is a lot to consider when looking at this statistic.

yep, he'd also have to maintain that level for almost a decade but he's about the best inside mid in the comp imo, has the endurance and pace to play on the outside is just not as damaging by foot. He's is a better mark than goat though. He's very very good imo and also very very underrated.

I thought he was fantastic tonight. Lost count how many times he cleared the ball. He's a tough nut, and he's only 21.

Tonight I noticed a perfect example of why this stat is worthless.

There was a passage on the wing where about half a dozen guys from both teams got their hands on the ball in the pack only to have their kicks or handballs smothered, finally it ricochets to Fyfe and he spins out of a tackle and slams it on the boot while a guy is trying to drag him down.

The ball goes less than 40m to a contest where it is spoiled - so technically an ineffective disposal - but the ball spills out to Walters who kicks a goal from 50.

I'll take that kind of poor DE any day thanks.

I think 50:50 contest or better counts as effective disposal. But not really sure about exact definition, effective is somehow interpretable...
