I'm with ya on this one Ferbs. Which is not to downplay the significance of what is happening to the Ukrainian people, or to exonerate the Russians in any way. But all the "worst war in Europe since WW II" stuff did make me wonder if somehow the Balkans had suddenly been excised from the continent.

And it would be good if some of the shitty stuff in Asia and Africa received the same attention.

Did you really not think that was just propaganda bullshit?
Definitely had a stink to it at the time, but it’s hard to know either way at the time. I thought the audio was faked more than anything.

It is called an IO campaign, and is a considers part and line of effort in any military action.

You betray your ignorance by mocking it.

A small country being attacked by a massive military uses every tool available. Your dismissal of this and other similar actions shows how profoundly you do not understand contemporary operations.

The Taliban were masters of it, and hence part of the reason we lost.

No. It’s not like Russia hasn’t been bombing the fu** out of Ukraine
His dismissal shows where his loyalties lie here. There will be nothing Russia does that is not justified, and nothing Ukraine does will not be worthy of contempt.

Profoundly disappointed.

There has been a lot of disinformation out there tbf to Ferbs. I don’t think he’s “carrying water for Putin” as you have stated earlier in the thread, I don’t want to speak (or write) for him as he’s capable of doing that himself, I think he’s just been looking at this from a geopolitical pov.

We’ve been posting about this build up for a long time in this thread, since there was a hint of a build up of Russian troops on the Ukrainian boarder. Personally, I posted a while back that it’s I think it’s in Ukraines best interest to hand over the troublesome parts of Ukraine on the eastern boarder to Russia. If I wrote that now you’d probably think the same of me.

Though that’s all out the window now because of what Russia has done. The Russian currency is crumbling and they’ve become pariahs.

The Ides of March is approaching. :thumbsu:

"THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court said Monday he plans to open an investigation “as rapidly as possible” into possible war crimes and crimes against humanity in Ukraine.

Prosecutor Karim Khan said in a statement that the investigation will look at alleged crimes committed before the Russian invasion, but added that “given the expansion of the conflict in recent days, it is my intention that this investigation will also encompass any new alleged crimes falling within the jurisdiction of my office that are committed by any party to the conflict on any part of the territory of Ukraine.”

The court already has conducted a preliminary probe into crimes linked to the violent suppression of pro-European protests in Kyiv in 2013-2014 by a pro-Russian Ukrainian administration and allegations of crimes in Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014, and eastern Ukraine, where Russia has backed rebels since 2014.

In December 2020, then-ICC Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda said the probe uncovered indications that “a broad range of conduct constituting war crimes and crimes against humanity within the jurisdiction of the Court have been committed” in Ukraine."

Its also called lies used for war propaganda purposes.

Look at the emotional reaction everyone had when they heard story. WE all felt sympathy for the plucky dudes who held the line even tho they knew the costs (and the futility of their actions.)

It was a lie designed to manipulate our attitude to this conflict.

So how you. me or anyone else can trust anything anyone says about this. (Putin included.)

I understand modern operations all too well, hat's why I'm pissed off about it.. You're there getting all upset about 14 dead kids, which is ****ed sure, but when the Saudi Air Force bombed a school bus in Yemen in sept 2018 did you say anyhthing? WE supply that government with arms. We make money off that genocide.

How is our role in that giving us any moral high ground to criticise Russia.

It isn't because we are a morally bankrupt society. SO when we criticise a gangster like Putin, who committed false flag operations against his own people to take power including blowing up an apartment building full of Russians, we're just talking shit.

And I include Putin in that.

I'm not loyal to Russia or Ukraine. I just know the history of this situation.

Putin might be a piece of shit but we are no better and have working toward this war since the turn of the century.

Anbd you can jam your George Dubya "with us or against us" rhetoric up your arse too.

I'd spit in Putin's face just as soon as Biden, Morrison, Trump or any of these other ****s.

"Ohhh but Putin's bad and he's hurting white people."

That's about the size of it.

Absolute bald-faced lies. Imagine being Ukraine and having to listen to this. It's bad enough just being the rest of the world and having to hear it.

How is it they remain on the Security Council? Surely there's a way to remove them.

Not condoning what they’ve done but they have actually done a pretty good job of not killing more civilians. Hopefully they don’t get desperate and keep it that way.

You've got to hand it to the US or whoever masterminded this. Its brilliant and it will change the world. But its kicking the Russia can down the road a generation and when they come back they'll be even more belligerent and pissed off.

10 years ago Russia and Ukraine were on the verge of signing an agreement about Ukraine's oil and gas reserves. Then the US interfered in Ukraine's internal politics in exactly the way the lied about Russia doing it in 2016. Now Putin controls most of those oil and gas reserves and there will a hot war for them (well at least Crimea) soon enough.

In the meantime US gas now has a much larger market and that means more fracking. It changes the world's gas market dynamics and even makes the stuff they wanted to frack from here viable again.

We broke a company called Metgasco when they tried to drill for gas in this region. With the active support of 97% of the population of the area, its wasn't a bunch of crazy radicals. It was everyone. AT one point 10,000 people from Lismore - that city down the road that's now under water - had committed to standing against the 1000 riot police that arrived in town. The cops went home, said not only were they not prepared to fight that many people they weren't prepared to go against a community's wishes like that. And they come up here with choppers, fly around and steal people's weed.

So that actually meant something.

Since then the government has changed the laws in Australia and what we did is now terrorism.

And now there is every chance a bunch of fracking campaigners will be back here to try that shit on again.

It's not intentional though. They've been bombing indiscriminately the whole time. They used cluster bombs in Kharkiv today.

Lots of people have gone to ground, sheltering in subway stations and such. I agree that the Russian forces could be more targeted, but they're not deliberately trying to avoid killing civilians. Not by a long shot. Those cluster bombs killed 16 children at a nursery school last night.

I'm not loyal to Russia or Ukraine. I just know the history of this situation.

Putin might be a piece of sh*t but we are no better and have [been] working toward this war since the turn of the century.
I'm yet to see your convincing argument for this based on "the history of the situation".

I don't dispute that the disproportionate coverage given to this conflict compared to others is disappointing. It's unfortunately the way of the world, and is not all down to racism. It's partly because of the brazen audacity of it, partly due to the importance of Russia geopolitically. And no doubt partly due to a feeling that people in some part of the world are considered to be in constant state of conflict, so it loses newsworthiness.

Jesus Febs. The US didn’t mastermind this. IMO Putin is just going down the same path as every dictator. He’s surrounded himself with yes men and those that don’t are removed, leaving him more alone and isolated to think about what he wants, and that’s probably just that he to be in the history books.

I know. It’s awful. A neonatal ward was forced into a subway. Believe me, I’m not at all condoning Putin’s actions. It’s disgraceful. What I’m worried about is what he’s capable of he thinks he has to win at any cost necessary because I don’t think he’ll fall on his sword.
