I'm finding the "Ratten knocks back Port" thing to be pretty amusing.

I guess you can spin any story.

The story is an interesting one. First, Ratten is a clear favourite even to the point where the betting is suspended on the Port job. The market opens and he has eased out a little and then he backs out of the race and says that he isn't interested. Port then say the same thing and say they dont want him, and now GC are speaking to Ratten.

Maybe GC are looking to replace a coach that might be heading to Port? Either way it seems to be a bit of a shambles. Who would have thought.

Ratten had his first interview and told Port that if they traded in Cotchin, Franklin, Watson and 2 all Australian defenders, he could work out a good game plan for the club. They both decided that maybe they weren't the right fit for each other :D

Power have dodged a bullet with Ratten - But why does no-one want to coach Power ?

List has holes but isn't hopeless, retained all their young players, moving to Adelaide Oval in 2014.

Plenty of people will want the gig. They just don't want it to be public knowledge.

You're seriously telling me that Alan Richardson wouldn't want that gig?

On another topic, what Robbo is doing with this McCarthy story is absolutely disgusting, and I'm surprised Whateley isn't calling him out on turning what is something very tragic and sad into a football narrative.

Coaches dont want to be named when they're going for jobs any more. There is a huge stigma attached if you miss out on a few jobs, even if you're in the final few. That is what happens normally, let alone if you miss out on the Port job. No offence.

Did anyone else notice that certain news outlets were only mentioning the fact that McCarthy was a Collingwood player? It's almost like Port Adelaide don't exist in Victoria.

It's almost like they live in another state :D

Kidding mate, I know what you mean. The Victorian media is a lot better than most other state based media, but this story has turned into a love fest for Collingwood. There is no doubt that there are some close ties with some of the players, but a more balanced reporting would be good.

I've heard that Port have released something that Brad Ebert has done for him, is this true?

Hahaha, I hate the media sometimes.

I haven't heard anything about the Ebert thing though...

Here is what Brad Ebert had to say at the funeral.

http://www.portadelaidefc.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/6038/newsid/148125/default.aspx

“John, although you may be gone mate you’ll never be forgotten,”
“Your memories and the fun times we shared will be forever in our hearts and your legacy will live on forever.”

“From the moment John walked in the door, you knew that he was going to be a great guy,”
“He was amazing to be around and he’s made some amazing friends in the short time that he was at the club.
“He was a guy that you felt instantly comfortable with. You were able to talk about anything and he’d give you experiences back.”
“Although it was only 10 months to a year, speaking to the guys it was like he’d been here for 10 years,”
“Just the way he came in and embraced the Port Adelaide way. He got around the team. He was fantastic.

“He was a very easy going guy and that’s what made him so likeable, but when it came to football he was desperate to succeed and desperate for this team to improve,”
“On the track, he was amazing. He’d work so hard before and after training, and he set a new standard for the team.”

“When we got John, we also got Dani and both of them embraced the club amazingly well,”
“They were great people to be around and I loved spending every minute with them.”
“We really appreciate all the support from the fans,”.
“It’s been amazing the past couple of weeks to see the shrine out the front (at Alberton Oval) and all the messages and the comments left.
“It is amazing to see how much he touched so many people in such a short amount of time, but that was just how he was.”

I also like how in all this side by side, mates stick together etc etc it's conveniently glossed over the fact they delisted him.

"I've figured out where we went wrong at Carlton... what we actually need is 4 wooden spoons, and 4 number 1 picks..."

They want a feel good story and if they printed something along those lines, the backlash would be pretty huge from Collingwood. I could see why too, it would come across poorly and be bad timing. We would probably bash the journalist who wrote the article and call him a flog if that was the angle they went down after a guy lost his life.

I would have been interested to see what happened if Ratten coached a list like Port's, just to see his coaching ability and game style.

I'd be targeting the media. Collingwood are obviously feeling the loss, but the way the media are handling this is where the issue is. If another journo pointed out how absurd much of this coverage is, I don't think there'd be any great issue.

It'd be interesting to see how this would be reporting if Collingwood were not playing finals. Right now plenty is being made of them doing it last week for their mate, and this week it is about how they'll recover from yesterday mentally, physically and also in terms of preparation for game day given the lost time.

Were Collingwood not playing I think we'd be hearing far less as there'd be no football side note other than 2 clubs lost a great mate.

Port Adelaide is a poisoned chalice. List needs to be rebuilt. The administration is ****ing shit. Their young midfield isn't too bad- Boak, Hartlett could be guns, Brad Ebert is a good starter, and they have 2 young ruckmen in Redden and Lobbe who, if they work out how to play forward, could be very good for PA, but they lack a tagger and a few genuine B-Graders (Boak, Hartlett and possibly Wingard will be A-Grade IMO). Pearce (although very soft) could be good off HB for them if he adds a defensive side to his game. Surjan will be a mainstay for the next 5 years too. Pittard is good also.

The list for me would be:

1. KPD with skills (Trengove, Carlile and Chaplin aren't good enough by foot)
2. B-Grade mids (They have Boak, Hartlett and Wingard who could be A-Graders soon, and only 2 real B-Graders in Ebert and Cassisi, then blokes like Matt Thomas and Matthew Broadbent running through there)

I have no doubt Butcher, Gray, Ebert and Westhoff could combine as a good forward line. Westhoff has improved this year quite a bit.

The Redden/Lobbe debate will continue for a while. Redden needs more around the ground work compared to Lobbe but will demolish him in the hitouts department

Ehh.... I'd rather inherit something that you've essentially got to build up rather than have a few superstars over 25... that makes things difficult.

Whoever takes the job can make it his own.

I don't know enough about it.

I liked the suggestion, though, that they should be playing at Adelaide Oval already. They'll fill the stands that are there, the atmosphere will actually attract new fans, and it'd give the club some distinct identity. Football Park has always been Adelaide's in my mind, Port need to make sure that we all associate Adelaide Oval with them.

Thomas and Broadbent are very good players who bring a lot of good attributes, both would be close to B graders based off this season.
