Name 1 player who played FF who had a better season. Riewoldt should've been in the side, no doubt
Hawkins, Walker and Pavlich.

Shit, you could even throw in Buddy.

Shit, you could even consider "The Dish Decoy".

Buddy
Pav in the second half of the year
Petrie

Say what Jack did that the others didn't, then I'll tell you what the others did that Jack doesn't.
Two played CHF. Buddy didn't play out of the square at all- it was always Roughead or Gunston. Pav was playing more up the ground as well in comparison. What did Petrie do against good sides?

Hawkins and Pav both played CHF. Tex I'll agree to an extent. Didn't exclusively play out of the goalsquare like Jack did

CHF/FF is pretty much the same thing these days.

Is Hurley FF or CHF? Crameri? Gumby?

Because at various stages, they all started at the top of the fifty, and at others, they started from the square.

Pav started from the square plenty of times, likewise Hawkins.

Heck, Buddy probably did even more. How many times was the fifty cleared out, so that he could be left with his man deep inside fifty?

Don't get hung up on listed positions; those days are over.

Does it really matter that someone doesn't play out of the square. There is a reason FF's are dying breed.

You did my job for me.

A full forwards job these days is much more than standing in a goal square waiting to kick a goal. Jack is a good forward but he has to work on other aspects of his game if he is to be a great forward.

It is an effective way to remove inconveniences from a flawed argument though. Pav, Buddy and Hawkins removed from an inane argument in one fell swoop!

Walker's the one that I think is being undersold the most, to be honest.

Same amount of games as Buddy, pretty much the same amount of goals, and an overall more consistent year.

Yeah, the only reason he could possibly have missed the squad is the exact same reason that was ignored for Buddy and Pendles.

No problems with Buddy being selected - I look at the total package for a Key forward = With a defensive presence being the top of the tree - And Buddy does this in spades.

Pendlebury lucky to be in the team - Lots of ball, but little impact.

Mitchell should have been in before Thompson - Comparing kicking is like 'chalk and cheese'.

An issue with the midfield group is that you have Thompson/Watson/Kennedy selected - 3 big bodied, inside midfielders with exceptional clearance ability and winning contested ball. You can't have 4 in the one midfield so one has to miss out - Mitchell is a better player than Thompson and probably all three - And Mitchell clearly had a better year than Thompson.

Thompson is a more polished version of Boyd.

On another topic, and I'll try and not be insensitive here, but how the hell is Eddie and other elements of Collingwood getting away with using the "Side by side we stick together" mantra in the wake of McCarthy's death... when they delisted him? The fact that he was given the flick seems to have been forgotten along the way. Obviously Brown, Blair, Beams et cetera are distraught and have every right to be, but I think I actually heard Ed describe him as "the great" John McCarthy... I mean, I shouldn't be surprised, but it's a little bit extreme. It's as if Port Adelaide doesn't exist.

Agreed. I think it's also a bit disrespectful to Port.

To be fair you can be a champion bloke without being a champion footballer which seems to be the case with McCarthy.

I don't, however, like the fact Eddie called him "the great" John Mccarthy, that comes across as patronising given he wasn't good enough to make it at Collingwood as a footballer.

Indeed. Over here there has been a fair bit in the media about it from a Port perspective but all the interstate and national media almost seem to have forgotten he played for Port and played more than half his games for them.

I think "the great" is a reference, not a description. "The great McCarthy"... no idea what/who/where it stems from, though

Harsh point about the 'stick together' thing. They all seem to have kept in touch. Although I'm not sure Eddie hasn't over-played it a bit. Collingwood should only be a footnote, not a major part of the story in any way, shape or form.
Some of the coverage here in Vic you'd barely know he left.

Everyone is a champion bloke in death...

No doubts there, but he'd gone to a different club. I think if he wasn't at AFL level anymore that might have been appropriate as Collingwood by all reports (their own) look after their former players, and there are obviously Collingwood players who were very close to him, but using a lyric from the song to talk about the grieving process is pretty damn trite.

I still would've prefered to hear something along the lines of "our great mate John McCarthy". "The Great" just doesn't sit well with me and sounds patronising given what eventuated with his career.

I don't mind that too much; they're just reporting the news (even if it's something they've probably gone fishing for, is pretty uninteresting, and is provocative) as it's happened.

I'd rather that than them always having an agenda and pushing one side of an argument.
