Oisin!! Best retention via marks on his kicks. In the league. He's obviously reading the play so much better this year. And this is a sign that his skills are really coming on, too.
Conversely PFD is the second worst on this stat - only 3 of his 28 field kicks (ie, not shots on goal) have been marked, just ahead of Petracca, but Petracca is kicking to the dees forwardline so is lucky if any of kicks get marked.

I think PFD has the licence to "run and gun". Holmes too. Keeps the opposition defence on tenterhooks, I guess.

So much so that many times when the forward (like say Hawk) marked a PFD running kick, I remember thinking it was a fluke..

Probably comes down to our mix of control versus chaos .
As the clip said you don't play in defence unless you have a high retention ratio.
We were the fastest for ball movement last season and are still high now so with that you'd expect some chaos ( which we like ) in F50
Maybe the plan is to get it in fast so our forwards can do their thing, if that's a mark fine but we also don't mind a bit of chaos as well.

They spend 15 minutes discussing an awful measure. Tom Lonergan would have excelled it as well.

Would appreciate it if you could expound on it a bit more (time permitting)..
Mark retention favours people who make unrisky disposals. Ie defenders who are restricted by team rules. The best kicks are given license to take risk to move the ball into and through congestion. Or once in congestion make good decisions. Naturally those types of possessions lead to a lower mark retention rate. A a D50 switch under no pressure would have an expected retention of about 90%, while a typical kick I50 would be around 20%.

It is also takes zero consideration into second order effects. After waiting a Defender kicks it 20m to the boundary laterally to a player in an unthreatening position left free by the opponent letting the opposing team set up a forward press which traps the team in its D50. The ball is retained but the next person has less opportunity to move the ball.

There are also a bunch of situations where retention is secondary to territory. Eg long kick down the line to a contest. The team with a ball is deciding that a stoppage further away from goal is more preferable to trying an option that has a higher retention or turn over probability closer to their opponent’s goal

That really clears it up. Thank you.

ADVICE REQUIRED...

I'm waddling over to AO next week for the game (first time in a decade). I've not been to AO before for footy, so just looking for any feedback on the least offensive place to sit with a family? I personally couldn't care less if I sat in their cheer squad.... The Missus and kids however...

CatToTheFuture , are you able to assist with any recommendations?

It's all pretty chilled i wouldn't worry. The hill is full of drunks but even there it's harmless banter. Would still keep the kids away from the hill though. They park the visiting members in front of the hill which is why I think the place gets a bad rep sometimes.

The ground level stands have the poorest view but you're right there. I was close enough to hear Dangers lung collapse in real time once.

Western stand has the best bars and food out the back, you can go kick a footy there behind the stand at half time if there's room. If you want to kick the footy with the kids on the east side you'll need a pass out. South stand don't bother.

Be aware that with our time slot at 3:45 you'll be staring at the sun for half the game in the east stand. Perfect views west or south

There's also a space in front of the red members seats in the west stands which is standing room for any GA. That's not a spot to act like the hill and security will not tolerate ill behaviour there, but you can watch the coaches come out, you can see guys running on and off the bench etc. You gotta get there early for a spot though.

I'm in the east stand but prefer the west stand in general.

Jesus mate, you need a job at SA tourism... :p

Thanks for the heads up, there's some seats left in the Western side, I think I'll try that.

2021- One of the understated what if moments.
Last home and away, v Demons at home.
Big lead.
We rest several key players including Danger and Demons get momentum, and Gawn goals after the siren. Instead of finishing top, we get an away final v Port.
Does anyone know what would have happened if we won that game?
Home final v Lions , at ? Geelong?

Probably my favourite game ever has been uploaded in full thanks to the mercurial Rhett Bartlett.

I used to have it through name-a-game. Can't believe this stuff isn't more available.
