Somehow I'm not quite sure I belong here, as I've been an anti-football person since I was a kid... purely because it's inescapable if you live in Victoria and I had no interest in it whatsoever. You can imagine my joy when I scored an American guy who knew almost nothing about the game. SAVED! I won't be stuck with an ocker sitting on the couch with his tinnies watching match after match of AFL.
How wrong I was. Thankfully, "Stealth" as he's known here, doesn't fit the picture of the ocker on the couch. However, after he came to Australia the first time, it wasn't long before he took AFL to heart and memorised the entire list of premiership stats since the sport's inception.
I began seeing our sport from a very different and fresh perspective. I started having an interest in AFL *gasp!* I even phoned him while he was home in the US on Grand Final Day 2000 to "watch" the live broadcast with him as they aired simultaneously.
Thanks to him, I attended the first AFL match of my life, and with the onset of season 2001 have already been to the footy twice in two weeks *double gasp!*. Best of all, I'm learning things about the game as he does.
I actually LIKE footy now. I never thought I'd be saying that. It took an American to turn me around.
Irony will always get you in the end
