I received an email from Optus.

”It is with great disappointment I’m writing to let you know that Optus has been a victim of a cyberattack that has resulted in the disclosure of some of your personal information.

Importantly, no financial information or passwords have been accessed.“

That’s good. :D

The information which has been exposed is your name, date of birth, email, phone number, address associated with your account, and the numbers of the ID documents you provided such as drivers licence number or passport number. No copies of photo IDs have been affected.

That’s bad. 😂

If you haven't done so already, would strongly recommend contacting the credit rating agencies to ban financial institutions from conducting a credit rating on you. That information/explanation should have already been provided to you by Optus, but just incase you (or anyone else here concerned of having your identiy scammed), here is the link to put the request in (and you can tick the box at the bottom for them to contact the other agencies on your behalf)

Thanks for looking out mate. :)

How does that work if you apply for credit later down the track though?

Yes that’s the downside if you have some borrowing requirements on the horizon. My understanding is you would need to work with your bank/broker and make them aware of this, and then notify the credit agencies that you would like the ban lifted as you have a genuine/verified application to process.

I'm an Optus customer but never got an email apart from the generic one.

Think I'll just monitor it for now. Surely I'd get notified if any credit was requested in my name? I'd have thought they'd also need physical signatures wouldn't they?

Same here.

I too am with Optus and haven’t receive any message from them (as yet). I just thought I wise to put the ban on anyway.

Unfortunately there’s no guarantee you’d be notified if someone is trying to open a credit card or something in your name. Scammers would likely use PO Boxes as your address and would likely target second/third tier financial institutions (where the process is mostly online and it’s rare to actually talk to a staff member to verify your identity) to open up these facilities.

Yeah that's fair enough, it's always good to get other opinions.

I do check my credit score monthly (just a habit I've always had) so I'd guess I'd notice a change if anything new was opened. It would have to impact my score, surely.

Last time I checked mine, a siren randomly appeared out of nowhere.

Didn't even know you could check your credit score, where do you check it?
Various sites do it. I use getcreditscore.com.au

Apparently banks/credit unions etc use a slightly different model but it gives you a good idea of where your score stands.

If yu want to see the full report itself, you can get one free every 3 months from the rating agencies such as this:

I think I got one of those a few years back when my mate worked for Equifax, but never done it again. I've never repaid a credit card late so assumed my rating would be pretty good.

I was an Optus customer but only for my mobile. They'd have my email address only I would assume because my last stuff with Optus was 2018 and since then I've got a new passport, new credit card/debit card and never had my licence as digital. Feel like I'm safe as my email has probably been out there in other data hacks
