It's just confusing because on one hand you say that you can look for work and that your workplace doesn't have a problem with people doing so. You're now even saying that your workplace will help you move on and they are used to a high turnover.

On the other hand you're saying that anyone that lets the boss know that they are looking for work is a fool.

The two don't really go together
The joys of the big accounting firms moombs. Got a few ex Delloite and PWC at my current work (the kiwi version of telstra) and they stand out like a sore thumb that they're ex big-4 and are still learning the tact of how big business works a bit different. It's cringey at times

Because you were commenting from the perspective of an industry where your boss is the person who assigns the projects and jobs you work on. My 'boss' has no personal investment in whether I stay at the firm or go. In fact one of the managers on this job talks almost daily about how he hates corporate jobs.

That's really weird but good at the same time I guess.

Yeah when I first heard that they want you to sort out a career plan I did feel a bit apprehensive about mentioning I didn't want to work here after 5 years, but then my performance manager made the point that they'd rather be constructive and help shape my future, which I suppose is their way of saying "Look at us, we care about you. While you're here doing your CA and in the year afterwards, keep in mind how much we care about you and work hard for us."

That being said, the majority of people I know wouldn't feel comfortable quitting a job before they have something secured, and those are people in a raft of industries. There are always ways. If you're looking at specific jobs, the people looking to hire you would understand your needs as you're currently employed, if they're keen on you that is!
It's not about wanting to quit before having something lined up. It's just the commitment to taking calls (each would be 7-15 mins each) during business hours. Would be doing myself a disservice if i didnt take the calls. Would stand out that im looking elsewhere to my current work when i spend a good hour a day out on phone calls. Catch 22 really. Luckily I'm in a spot where i can just commit to qutting and put my next job as the #1 priority and everyone knows it

I've worked in both, in fairness they were pretty relaxed as well but that's because it was a part-time gig and almost as a 'favour' to me. I've got my eyes open enough to know that if I did land a job in a corporate job outside of the financial services firms, that things are quite different.

Fair enough. I've obviously not been in that position yet so not sure how I'd handle it.

That's really good of them if they follow through and do help you get where you want to be. My current employer has a similar mantra but with boss my boss & I leaving never really got to see if they were serious about it

all depends on the work you do tbh

in other roles i've been less at my desk & it wouldnt stand out so much. Or I've been sitting within a business unit away from finance people so wouldn't be abnormal for me to not be at my desk

this role, me not at my desk = on his phone looking for work

Trouble is I have no idea what I want to do which doesn't help. :P

I reckon career guidance at school needs a big improvement. What I thought I wanted to do at school I would be horrified at the thought of doing now.

It's hard because your lifestyle changes so much but I still reckon more could have been done in my era. And from the sounds people still go into the real world not really knowing what they want to do.

Yep.

Kinda headed down this path purely based on what i was getting best marks in. Careers teacher saw good marks in an area with good job prospects and that was it. Probably spent about 5 mins working with me over VCE

tfw people talk about their job prospects when you don't really have any

Yeah I've just working in Hospo and Retail my whole life because they are jobs you can get without any qualifications. I have no qualifications and I have no idea what I want to do with my life. So I've just bounced from one dead end job to the next since I left high school.

It's shit but when I dont know what I want to do with my life, then it's just what happens.

Surely you get to a certain point and have some sort of idea?

At the very least do a Tafe course in something and see if you like it, and if you don't, some of the stuff you do might interest you and you could pursue that?

I have no qualifications and have done ok jod23 . You don't necessarily need them depending on what you want to get into.

I'll end up doing uni part time at some point but I'm waiting until I'm sure I know what I want that to be in. Until I'm sure, it just seems a colossal waste of money and effort.

Also, I bought a Nintendo 3DS this week (first Nintendo anything I've ever owned). Bought the original Sonic on it and the nostalgia is amazing.

We used to play Sonic at my Nana's house (who lives in Melb - so it was only ever in school holidays we were there) really early in the morning before anyone else (parents/nana) was awake. Playing it again, for the first time in years, took me right back to being 10 years old and waking up super early to go play haha. Absolutely love it :thumbsu:

Free uni would open up so many options I believe to unsure 18-35 year olds to have a go. 3 year $20-40k commitment is nuts when so many people just aren't sure where they want to head. I know right now there's 2-3 possible moves I'd consider which entail going back to uni but I've got no way of knowing right now which one to take and there's no way I'm getting a student loan unless I'm 100% sure

Another terrorist attack it seems in France - Nice this time.

There is no end to this.

Shit going down in Nice, not good. My girlfriend has a friend who was actually at the scene, got pushed into and locked into a club, and bolted for the back door and managed to get away. Just absolutely awful that this is happening so frequently now and I just don't know what the answer is.

Saying 60 dead. Large truck ploughed into a crowd. Then there was a gun battle. So so depressing now

I don't know where the world goes from this. It's just horrible.

Well in France's case, probably Maria Le Pen. Then the cycle becomes even more dangerous if that is possible.

Saying 73 dead now. Vehicles as weapons. Very frightening
