I'd feel bad going on work time for interviews and taking all the calls. As it happens I've got an interview lined up this Monday, trying to make it as late as possible in the day (he is only available 10-11 and after 4) so I'm just finishing 30 mins early and going home from the interview
If it's over lunch it's not really work time so I don't see the issue personally. Yeah calls is trickier. I just think the sensible thing to do is have something lined up, or you risk not having a job for a while with bills to pay, but each to their own.

Sorted there really. Living with the missus mum so thankfully dont have that added worry. Agree though that if there was a mortgage or rent to pay I'd be more tactical about it.

is that as horrible as it sounds?

I lived with my father in law for three months before moving over here......would never do it again, should have paid through the nose for a hotel.

nah she's a breeze really easy to live with

the only reason we'd consider moving into something else is having something that is actually ours whether its rented or not when it's your place you can do what you want to it etc.

I wouldn't let my bosses know I was looking for other jobs while I was in my current role. But then the turnover in staff for us isn't that great.

If you can avoid it it's clearly preferable, you don't flaunt it! But that wouldn't stop me looking before I leave work. Just can't stand the thought of not having a job and not having any certainty. Don't think I've been completely unemployed in about six years.

So far today I've stepped out for 5-6 phone calls with recruiters all sorts of times of the day not over lunch. Normally I'd be lucky to if I left my area without my laptop that many times a week. So it's pretty obvious when someone is looking elsewhere I reckon

Yep. But that's just the way it is. I'm actually surprised so many seem uncomfortable with looking for a job while in a job.

Is high turnover normal where you are?

Everywhere I've been in NZ/Aus I'd be uncomfortable with my peers & boss knowing I'm looking elsewhere.

Being slightly uncomfortable is better than being unemployed and having no job prospects! At least in my opinion.

I work in financial services in one of the big four. If you aren't on your way out after 4 years then there's pretty much something wrong with you.

Doesnt really apply to me so much now but I'd avoid letting bosses know I'm looking elsewhere. Any good projects, jobs, promotions and you won't get a look in because they'll think they'll just have to replace you when you're gone.

Anyone who goes out of their way to tell their direct superior that they're looking to quit is a bit silly, think that's common sense.

If you're not making any secret of going out for interviews then you're pretty much letting the boss know.

There's a difference between stepping out for a 4.30/5pm interview and telling your boss that you've got an interview at 10am and you'll be taking a long lunch.

OK, so when you said your work doesn't have a problem with people going for interviews you meant that people just don't tell them.

Much clearer then.

They don't have a problem with it. My above comment was a general comment in response to Jd saying he wouldn't feel comfortable.

Easy tiger.

I said I'd feel uncomfortable because any boss/peer with half a brain would know something is in the pipeline with the way I've been going out for calls every hour. The interview next week at 5 has come about because of 2 of the calls i've taken, i just dont see how it would be possible on the sly

Very confused now.

Oh well.

Large firms such as where I work are accustomed to a high turn over of employees. They actively ask us where we want to end up and assist us in that process by giving us extra training/jobs in the areas we want to move into, and when we want to leave, they are happy to have extracted their pound of flesh.

Smaller offices, or other industries, may be much more defensive and proactive in retaining employees, and would therefore not appreciate someone being so open about not seeing themselves there long term, in which case you need to be mindful and act accordingly.

Was that really so confusing?

in big 4 accounting, people expect you to be looking for your next job post CA. You obviously try and hide it though.

Don't need to try and hide it, at least not anymore. At my last performance review they actively asked me where I was hoping to work after I completed my CA, and whether they could put me on jobs/give me training that would assist me. I don't know if this is just a new approach they're taking, but I guess they're just resigned to the turnover rate. As I just said to moomba, they get their pound of flesh so I suppose that's the trade-off.

It's just confusing because on one hand you say that you can look for work and that your workplace doesn't have a problem with people doing so. You're now even saying that your workplace will help you move on and they are used to a high turnover.

On the other hand you're saying that anyone that lets the boss know that they are looking for work is a fool.

The two don't really go together

That's really weird but good at the same time I guess.

Safe to say industry is nothing like the big 4

That being said, the majority of people I know wouldn't feel comfortable quitting a job before they have something secured, and those are people in a raft of industries. There are always ways. If you're looking at specific jobs, the people looking to hire you would understand your needs as you're currently employed, if they're keen on you that is!
