That's an amazing idea and I'm glad you were here to point that out, but the discussion was actually around which was the most entertaining league, not people complaining that the PL is unwatchable.

And in fact this discussion underlines why an independent regulator being appointed will be such a good thing for the league.
PMSL that was good

Now it's just watching to see how City will win it.
Don’t count your chickens yet.

But will be interesting to see who was effected by the World Cup the most.

A few teams definitively had great momentum before this break.

Yeah it feels like it's just gone from which team can stop United winning it to which team can stop City now and we are all just waiting for Pep to leave like we were with Fergie haha.
Only another 2 and a half years to go.

One age old theory is that we have ancestral roots with England. Cities and towns are easier to say than them foreign places. It’s English after all. So people watch and invest in it, easy to pronounce club names. Easy to engage and know who’s playing.

Yeah, there's definitely something in that.

This might sound ridiculous but I think another contributing factor was the insane global celebrity status of David Beckham. There was a bit of perfect timing in that right when the EPL TV deals were making it the most accessible league competition you then had Manchester United winning the treble with David Beckham as a household name, even amongst those who don't follow the game. It had a big impact on pop culture in the late 90's/early 2000's with Beckham's name constantly referenced in film & TV, dominating tabloids etc. It generated a lot of international exposure for English football.

Cheers

I mean, football fans know teams and leagues, be it german, italian, french, spanish etc. But the average joe say would only know barca and real in laliga, or juve in Serie A because of ronaldo (i know plenty who are like this). and because of that do not take the time to learn the basics of the league - club teams.

easier to pronounce english words

An independent regulator won't do anything for the competitiveness of the league imo.

In the current competition the two European and South American teams are seeded into the semi-finals - then the European team wins the final. FIFA gives the winners $5 million and the runner up $4 million as an incentive to turn up - but apart from the filthy lucre no one cares about this competition.

If they expanded it to 32 teams, it would mostly boil down to the European teams in the last four, which we already have in the UEFA Champions League.

When has FIFA ever cared about anyone other than South America and Europe?

That's where the most successful clubs are based. But every FIFA country gets to vote so that's where the political decisions lie.
I mean, it's the same as the Champions League... it's not a fair competition and those teams will always be better off thanks to money etc etc. Wouldn't matter if an African team won the WC they'd still favour Europe.

Apparently this expanded CWC would be every 4 years instead of every year.

So it'd be the four winners? What if someone won it then fell off a cliff?

Yeah probs a bit unfair for 3 of the 4 winners they don't get to play in just after they won the CL.
