if Keane was happy being a backup he would have stayed at United.
Was he ever first backup at United?

If he was our 4th choice CB all it would take is 1 injury/suspension or an injury and he'd be in the side. At the rate JV & Toby have gone down this season that's more than enough football across 4 comps

He'd probably prefer playing every week.

LVG asked him whether he wanted to stay as a rotational player or leave for first team football.

Keane yes Maguire no

Maguire has been around a bit longer (was at Sheffield United for a few years) and I feel Keane has more potential/growth and has been a rock for Burnley the last couple of years.

Soton/West Ham/Everton/Stoke etc would be a good move up for Maguire however to see if he's capable enough, but I'm not sure if he's a top 6 team CB yet.
Keane is older than maguire.

Where was he in the pecking order though? There's a difference being a squad player and getting actual games.

Don't think he'd struggle to play 25+ games with us & then from there push Dier for a starting spot in the back 3

dunno where he was in the order but he was ahead of mcnair and blackett who played plenty of games

and Keane's rate of improvement over the last 2 seasons has been remarkable.
I see him as like a defensive version of Kane

Came from a big PL Academy, numerous lower league loans for a few years, then finally got his chance and took it at about 21-22yo. Only difference is Keane was sold, Kane got his chance at his parent club.

I'd rather a vanilla footballer than a dire one.

19 games at centre half in the league's stiffest defence. 14 goals conceded.
Given you've conceded 12 goals in 2017 maybe you should buy him. £50m please ;) :P

Only by a few months

Difference is Maguire was a bonafide starter for most of his time at Sheffield, Keane never really cemented himself anywhere until 2015 at Burnley, Maguire easily had upto 3 years of starting CB football on top him.

Keane did play while out on loan at a few places, but I'd imagine he would've been third/fourth choice CB at some places he was at.

Yeah just suggesting Maguire is also still improving quite rapidly - his form over the last month or so has been astounding.

I don't think either Keane or Maguire would be too excited to move to a club just to sit on the bench. Maguire has had issues with leaving the Blades for us given his lack of game time initially, so don't think he'd do it again.

Fair enough

I think Keane already being at a big club before probably helps him adapt too if he were to move on.

I reckon West Ham or Soton would be a good place to go for Maguire if you guys did get the chop, unless he wanted to stay and help in the Championship. Palace even if they stay up.

I think Soton would be perfect for him, or maybe even Everton - is Jagielka still starting for them? - as both seem the right level for him to step up to.

Think you guys are selling them both a bit short...

There is no reason either Maguire or Keane couldn't start pretty regularly for both Spurs & Liverpool.

True, just think there'd be a bit too much pressure on either to immediately jump up, but who knows.

They'd both be coming into our side more experienced than Kane, Winks, Alli, Dier etc.

Yeah that's true. Think you're pretty set for defence though. Could certainly slot in at Liverpool though, their defence looks pretty shakey at the moment.

At the time, Paul Joyce claimed in the Express that Ancelotti told our American owners in no uncertain terms that we needed to invest in a new spine. Klopp told them the current bunch of players was good and that he could achieve greatness with what was already there – a deciding factor in their appointing the former Borussia Dortmund man.

But almost 18 months on, it appears Ancelotti was right.

Even if he was ever worth 50mil FSG would never pay that. Go talk to the Manc clubs who are made of money.

Even if King Carlo's right, no way FSG would sanction the funds Carlo would've needed to fix the squad

Jurg is getting a lot out of this group which really isn't very good tbh, but at the end of the day their talent isn't that great and very suspect mentally

No manager is going to tell the owners going into an interview that their players are shit. Unless they've achieved it all like ancelotti. Doubt Klopp actually believed he could do anymore than he currently has with what he has got
