Part 4 is here:

And for what percentage of the population is that a big deal?

If you regularly need to travel between Melbourne and Sydney then living in Perth probably isn't for you. But for most people who live in Melbourne proximity to Sydney and Brisbane is pretty low on the list of things impacting their day to day life.
In terms of being isolated that's one of the biggest reasons people say it is. It's not going to feel that isolated for anyone who never leaves their suburb. The percentage of people who move from east and stay west would be less than the percentage who move from the west and stay east.

When you start talking international travelers it doesn't really matter. A 10 hour flight or 13 hour flight doesn't really change anyones thinking.

People convince themselves of shit that isn't important. Rottnest is half an hour away on the ferry and I love it. You know how often I go there? Maybe once a year if that. If they cancellled the ferry service that would be annoying but would have minimal impact on my life compared to say cancelling the trains or having to move 10km further out of the city.

People 'have' to live in Perth for the beaches, weather etc. then never go to the beach and spend most of their time in the air con. People 'have' live in Melbourne for the culture, food, shopping, whatever and then live in some new development 25km out of the city and spend their free time at Chadstone. It's a curious quirk of human nature.

Reminds me of one of my mates that was always going on about how busy they were and he doesn't have the time for this and that. Then come up and stay with them in Perth for the weekend and he spends most of it playing computer games whilst she watches TV.

Only Melbourne and Sydney (or Melbourne and Hobart) are particularly close. Melbourne to Brisbane or Adelaide is still over two hours. And how many times do you want to visit Brisbane or Adelaide? This isn't London to France where there's myriad places to explore.

I've got a bunch of friends in Melbourne and none go to Sydney on a regular basis. I've been to Melbourne more times in the last year than any of them have been to Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide or Hobart. For most people it's not a factor. In terms of work the E-W time difference is more of a PITA than than the actual distance. If something pops up in the afternoon here you need to get a hold of someone by 2pm to be any chance of getting an answer. Going the other way you're usually waiting around until about lunch time to get anything out of Perth.

Melbourne to Adelaide is an hour and 15 minutes, same flight time as to Hobart and just shorter than Melbourne to Sydney.

Isolation is weird full stop.

You might prefer Melbourne or Sydney or wherever over Perth but in a city of nearly 2m people you're not really missing out on anything. Perth being 3-4 hours away from Melbourne by plane compared to Sydney and Melbourne being an hour apart isn't a big deal. WA is highly centralised but even Mandurah, Bunbury, Geraldton, Albany etc. have everything most people need. You have to get down to places where the population is only a few thousand or fewer and then you are actually isolated from things, and in the SW even if you live in a small town you're not that far from a bigger one.

I reckon if I could do a heat map on Google maps I'd probably only be in about 2% of the metro area most of the time and maybe visit 25% over the course of the year. Draw a straight line from Scarborough to Midland and anything North of that may as well be 4 hours away by plane. Ditto anything South of about Jandakot.

Look scot maybe isolation was too strong a word. But I did feel far away from the east that I know and love. Mountains snow etc. I was always going home. Perth was a blast when I lived there though .

Each to their own. I don't feel any closer to friends living 4-5 hours drive away as I do to friends on the other side of the country despite them being geographically closer.

If I lived in Melbourne I'd miss the Perth Summer that these days really lasts from about November through to March/April after Winter drags its feet into October and Spring is ushered off the podium before making a speech. Grey skies would grate me after a while but I wouldn't be there for the weather. Would definitely go to the snow more. Not worth it from Perth for the cost and logistics vs the quality.

With this heat wave coming up the boring arse stereotype conversation of is Perth isolated can now move to the boring arse stereotype conversation about the weather.

^^

And thus this thread's true purpose is fulfilled.

Like sands through the hour glass, these...are the days...of our lives.
