Yoh-kine

And Karrin- yup but produced Karrin-up

Cheers Biggie.

Thinking there should be a thread on pronouncing names of suburbs, towns, hamlets and so forth.

I remember struggling to pronounce Daglish.

Always used to and still naturally say it like the old Liverpool manager – 'Dal-gleesh.'

Glendalough is named after its namesake in Ireland.

The name means valley (glen) of two lakes (loch). It was originally pronounced Glenda-lock. My Grandma who would've been 85ish this year lived nearby and called it as such. Over time enough people called in Glenda-low (which makes phonetic sense) and that is now what 99% of people call it (the train announcement etc.). I had friends living in the Northern suburbs from Ireland and they instinctively called it Glenda-lock then were surprised when the train announcement called it Glenda-low.

It's really no different to Albany or Derby. We're just a bit special in how we choose to pronounce things.

Seeing as we've delved back into Perth pronunciation and names for things and whatnot, a brief refresher course...

285 mL - middy
425 mL - schooner
570 mL - pint
1140 mL - jug

It's very straightforward. Two middies to a pint, two pints to a jug. Schooners can GTFO for messing up the system.

The bit of land between the letterbox and the road is the verge. Not the nature strip. That is something you get at the beautician.

The little shop on the corner where you buy a paper or a Masters/Brownes iced coffee (Farmers Union etc. also GTFO) is called the deli. Not the milk bar. That is something you buy in the deli if you have a hankering for white chocolate.

Anyone who says nature strip, milk bar or things like pot and imperial pint (as opposed to metric pint? Seriously SA sort your shit out) please hand in your WA card at the border with your fruit.

Train announcers still can't say Beckenham.

What do they say

My uncle lives in beckenham - has done since the 60's. Used to love going out there as kids and playing in the channels - collecting tadpoles, pig melon wars in the bushes - great memories. Seemed so far from the city back then but surprisingly falls into the much sought after "15kms" from city
