The Japanese car enthusiast lot is a weird one.

Can't afford to pay for nicer European cars, but they can splurge on shitty modifications like lowering their ride height such that driving over a leaf will cause damage to the undertray, and the most tacky spoilers and bodykits you can imagine. And the invariably young male drivers (presumably compensating for something) install such a giant exhaust that you wake up half the suburb with your hooning activities.

I don't get it.
 
You need to be a car enthusiast to get it. I used to be one but I grew out of it. Japanese performance cars arent exactly cheap either.

I am a bit of an enthusiast myself but it just never appealed to me. Maybe I needed to be more into it. And the Japanese performance cars are certainly a lot cheaper than equivalent European/American models here in Australia, you can pick up a decent WRX which might be a few years old with 100k on it for not that much.
 
Saw a guy driving a souped up commodore today - don't know if he was really short or the drivers seat was really low or a combination of the two but he could barely see over the dash. Coupled with an oversized manifold on the bonnet I'm not certain he would see the road in front of him - it was dangerous
 
Car enthusiast culture has certainly changed since the good old days.

Once upon a time modifying a car meant fitting extractors, getting the head done, fitting a 350 Holley or triple Webers/SUs, adjusting the timing etc.

Most 'modified' Jap cars these days have stickers on the doors, spoilers and exhaust extensions stuck on etc. and those that are actually performance tuned are plugged into a laptop.

The appeal with Jap cars is forced induction, ease of modding with the abundance of aftermarket parts and that they actually handle unlike Aussie and American stuff. Euros are definitely more expensive but compared to your average Holden and Ford, Jap cars hold their value a lot more and are quite expensive in the second hand market in comparison. WRXs are probably the cheapest of the main Jap cars. They dont really have much street cred anymore.

A stock-standard WRX has more 'street cred' than 90% of the "modified" Jap cars I see driving around.

You might be looking at the wrong cars. Though, I gotta admit that the import scene has seem to drop off. Well that is my feeling about it.
 
the whole JDM scene is shit anyway.

Never really understood modifying cars. Half the time, you end up ruining it for 98% of the time you use it, all for a .5 second drop in lap time the other 2% of the time.

It's a bit lame as far as hotted up/modified goes. Like you're playing Gran Turismo rather than working on an actual car.

Legitimately modified/performance Jap cars are vastly outnumbered by cheap shit with stickers and fart cannons.

I've probably seen maybe one or two dozen Mitsubish Lancer Evos getting around but I've seen hundreds of the $20k version getting around dressed up like them.

I come from the era of the likes of the XC, WB and VJ. The classic Aussie muscle cars. Modding an Escort or mum's Mitsubishi is bizarre and a waste of money and far from cheap in comparison. I tricked up a Mitsi V6 a few years back for more towing power. Epic fail that my wife is happy to remind me of... constantly.
I can see how the rotary scene would have a following but a tricked up Proton? And yes, Perf has a bloke that will take your money to do just that.

Jap motors can squeeze more power out of a cubic inch but they don't last long and have poor resale (just ask my wife) . Even worse is the safety issues in such small light cars.

Buy an old commodore, drive it like you stole it, rinse, repeat.
