I cant believe there's been to talk of Wirra's HUGE torp, from the goal sqaure to the center circle. It must have gone 80 metres, and dead strait, missed the centre circle by a foot. Whats the length of the dome?

I'd like to someone else kick in to Punda on the wing around fifty and then have him shoot off one of these things. It'd land in the forward fifty.

im not a great fan to be honest. yes its a spectactle but when they dont come off they look bad. i think there is right time in a game to do one and when not to. he shouldnt be pressured by supporters to kick one just for the thrill of watching it.

I thought it was very impressive. What's more, it looked as though the Dogs (my team) were "On Guard" for another monster after that, keeping everyone guessing.

If it means the opposition have another possibility to cover during kick-ins, then it's worth bringing out a torp now and then.

Yep, I think it is only worth him cracking it out, maybe twice a game, at the most.

But yeah, it would be good, if Lynch would do the kick in, get Wirra free, run to the defensive 50, and unload it.

Yeah, thats why its good.

Sometimes his torp works out well and sets up play for us and sometimes it doesn't (the good news, is that when it doesn't, its still two kicks away from the opposition's goals :)), but the real reason it is useful is because it spreads the zones on kickins- the fact the opposition has to cover half the ground to defend against kickins means that its easy for Wirra to pick holes in the zone and find someone with a chip kick if the big torp isn't on- all he really needs to do is unload it a couple of times a game just to keep the doubt in the opposition's mind and make them spread out.

Incidentally, one of the things I was happiest about on the weekend is that with Lynch being another defender with an absolute booming kick, Wirra doesn't have to do 100% of the kickins, which will probably go a bit easier on his hammies.

Bugger that.. if we are taking that aproach lets get Wira in the center circle and let him unload for goal

why not! at least try it in a easy game, like round 6 :D , give him a change at goal of the year

I can hear the NFL beckoning for Wirra at the end of his AFL career, following in the steps of former Eagle Darren Bennett and ex Bear/Hawk Nathan Chapman by becoming a Punter. He'll finally get paid a multi million dollar contract in comparison to the pittance AFL players are payed for booting the ball a couple of times and being on the field for maybe 30 seconds of a game-pretty sweet deal if you ask me. Ben Graham could do likewise-he's reaching his twilight years.

When he kicked that crucial long goal v dogs in that pulsating 99 final, we first got our glimpse of his long kicking ability.

His torps are a good weapon for us especially when Gardi can postion himself for a mark then kick it inside 50m inside 10 seconds

Derek Kickett wasn't a bad torp for those who remember his deeds at Bruce Rock and at West Perth

i saw this punt from a pretty good angle right in the middle of the wing on sunday and it was massssssssssive... it was just huge i couldn't believe it.. but i reckon its good for those situations where theres no short options so they go the long bomb.. most people won't expect a long bomb to the centre circle so stick a loose man that distance out and if it pays off.. rebound goal!

i was at the "G" years ago watching the hawks play the saints..i was sitting maybe 10 or so rows back when nicky winmar kicked for goal behind the centre square..it was a goal and cleared our heads by bloody 10 or more rows again...it was a huge kick..no wind assistance either..just great timing..actually i think it may have even been a drop punt...great kick and im a hawk supporter..

This brings me onto my next question:

Whats the longest kick by an Eagle you've seen? For me, it would have to be McIntosh at the GABBA. He kicked it out from full back, and it landed in the centre circle. I believe one of the TV stations measured it the next day and it was somewhere in the 85-90m range!

I have heard that Worsfold has given Wirra free reign as to when to unleash one. I think it's a great weapon to have and it usually pays off as the opposition arent expecting it. But too often would be a negative, once or twice a game is enough.

and why wouldnt you. Wirra seems able to just PICK when its the right time to bring one out and also to not overuse it. Its a very lethal tool, making the opposition have to enlarge there zone dramatically. Wirra also ALMOSt always gets it too, its great!
