I used to not like AmericaniZation, color and the like, but after teaching American English for like 10 years, now I really don't give a ****. It's a small difference, making a big deal about it is petty.
I feel the same way about most syntax, grammatical or spelling errors. Even the widely used substitution of your for you're and vice versa, the hypercorrection of using subject pronouns when object pronouns should be used (e.g. 'the gift was for Fred and I' ought to be 'the gift was for me and Fred') or not using the subjunctive mood when appropriate (e.g. 'I wish I was' ought to be 'I wish I were').

As long as there is full comprehension, shit like that don't matter.

Autocorrect is mostly responsible for those American spelling variations slipping in, in my experience. When it comes to all that though, grammar, spelling etc. I don't really give a shit, if you can understand the message it doesn't really matter.

EDIT: oh snap

If Americans don't like British English they are more than welcome to create their own language and butcher that in my opinion.

Sorry, but that's a dopey opinion if I've ever seen one. Languages evolve. Regional variations are one of the things that drive that evolution. It has been happening for literally as long as language has been a thing.

I just get annoyed at those who hate "the Americanisation of our culture" and then attempt to claim that they're not a xenophobic ****.

It is not necessarily xenophobic to critique/disagree with aspects of another culture.

This is just soooo true.

People that think English is a fixed thing that should never change....

Try reading this .. a bit of Beowulf in Old English, which evolved in an unbroken line into what we speak today.

Hwæt! We Gardena in geardagum,
þeodcyninga, þrym gefrunon,
hu ða æþelingas ellen fremedon.
Oft Scyld Scefing sceaþena þreatum,
5
monegum mægþum, meodosetla ofteah,
egsode eorlas. Syððan ærest wearð
feasceaft funden, he þæs frofre gebad,
weox under wolcnum, weorðmyndum þah,
oðþæt him æghwylc þara ymbsittendra

Yeah, all these new-fangled words like often, what, word, have no place in language!
Keep English pure and Beowulfian. Foreign words OUT!!

Don't be a dick, you know that's not what I meant. Not wanting things based on their own merit is fine, however it is xenophobia to not want Americanisation for the reason that it is American.

Don't think that's quite right. No-one is under any obligation to like anything, but when they angrily rant about things, unprovoked, that starts to cross over into xenophobia.

There are only 3 constants in life ... death .. taxes, and people not liking change.

Actually Mr. Clevertrousers, even calling people a "dick" was common in the US before it was in Oz, but now you are so used to it that it seems it's been strine forever.
omg odnt be so zenophobic

Yeah I think you're right. Also if I'm being pedantic I think jerk-off is more closely aligned to w@nker/tosser rather than dick.

I wonder what the cultural origins of f@#=knuckle are?

Yeah, people completely get their arguments arse-about with anything guernsey-related.

See guernseygate. OMG VICTORIANS IN THE SA GUERNSEY!!111. Umm terard, that's been happening for yonks. OMG IT'S ONLY KIDS WHO GET TO WEAR IT NOW, ORIGIN IS DEAD!!111.

Simple matter of fact, the state guernsey transcends club football and thus no club should ever wear it. End of.

It's similar digs with the forthcoming names on the back. We'll hear shit about "tradition" or "Americanisation" when the simple fact is given the sponsor/acronyms/establishment date clutter already in play, the names will look like shit.
Agreed. And yet on football (see also soccer, round ball game, wogball) the names on the back don't look bad. Weird.

They don't look bad because they are far looser fitting than our jumpers, so there's actually room to fit the names. Even the NBA jerseys which are most akin to AFL jumpers fit the names better simply because they are a loose fit.

There is freaking heaps of room on the back of a footy guernsey. Hockey and netball do just fine with tight fitting, sleeveless uniforms. The Kangaroos jerseys here are probably as close to an AFL guernsey size and fit as there is and there is absolutely no issue.

The numbers on those are heaps smaller than ours and the font is far thinner than the samples we've seen for the AFL. So some (IMO) major adjustments would have to be made to AFL jumpers.

They aren't exactly short of real estate there though are they? It can be done (and has been, as shown in several mock ups).

People fear change, which is fine, but some of the stuff that's being wheeled out in opposition to names on the backs of guernseys is a bit silly IMO.

- How will the names fit?
- It's too American
- Guernsey too cluttered
- It will make players too selfish
- Waste of money (lolle)

I've seen it as totally inevitable for several years now and i've come to accept it. About 5 games after it's brought in full time, nobody will care. Just like they don't with clash guernseys, just like they don't with coloured boots, just like they don't with sponsor logos, just like they don't with night football, just like they don't with everything.

So you're saying we should do things like the change loving Americans?

How many feet are there to a mile?

I like it not having the names, it makes me feel cool when I know who each number is.

I'd also miss, "go you number 5".
