We don't so much 'let them' run things the way they do as we collectively demand they do it the way it is now done. Any measurable dissatisfaction amongst the voters until the Coalition came in was that our various responses to the influx of boats was not tough enough. You or I might not be happy with what is done in our name but collectively Australians are delighted with the current approach.

The average Australian is as satisfied or dissatisfied with any particular issue as much as the media tells them to be, let's face it.

The asylum seeker issue being so politicised is a disgrace. It's an absolute non-issue to the average Australian, and yet our government and opposition feel the need to waste bucketloads of money and treat refugees like animals to "solve" the "issue"

Abbott has demonstrated an unprecedented level of buffoonery with his 'captain's choices' but by and large they are a reflection of his residence in Pleasantville and don't affect anyone, except the paid parental leave scheme he jettisoned and even that will be replaced by a family payment scheme (supported by the LNP) that will likely still be funded by the tax on big business.

So the crazed ramblings of the Mad Monk might be replaced by the dulcet tones of King Malcolm but the song will remain the same, just not so off-key.

Politicians need to understand that they are elected to represent their electorate in parliament, not to represent their party. All parliamentary votes must be conscience votes - voting along party lines regardless of the electorate's wishes is ridiculous.
It is what Nick Xenophon projects so well - that he represents his electorate in parliament.

That's fine if you are an independent, but if you're aligned to a major party then you are expected to take the party line and support your electorate within those lines. Although Steve Georganas is said to have lost Hindmarsh because his constituents did not support his views on gay marriage.

The issue is what will replace parliamentary democracy? The closest we have got are the facist and communist governments of the mid 20th century.

The tipping point will come when a party starts doing what's best for the people and not for the leaders. Iceland and to a far lesser extent Greece are interesting case studies.

I get that. I just don't think it is ideal.
I had cause to lobby a NT CLP senator many years ago on a certain issue. His response was that he had many submissions along similar lines, essentially agreed with the issues raised but would vote opposite because his party told him too.
