We don't so much 'let them' run things the way they do as we collectively demand they do it the way it is now done. Any measurable dissatisfaction amongst the voters until the Coalition came in was that our various responses to the influx of boats was not tough enough. You or I might not be happy with what is done in our name but collectively Australians are delighted with the current approach.
The average Australian is as satisfied or dissatisfied with any particular issue as much as the media tells them to be, let's face it.

The asylum seeker issue being so politicised is a disgrace. It's an absolute non-issue to the average Australian, and yet our government and opposition feel the need to waste bucketloads of money and treat refugees like animals to "solve" the "issue"

Give it 20 years, we'll be thanking Aunt Molly's musty lovebocks we have it.

I'm sure we will. I'm just saying that recycling storm water could have been done as well. It's not the desal plant that's the problem, it's this partisan bullshit that you can't accept a good idea because you didn't come up with it first.

The average Australian is an absolute ****wit.

The Guardian reported the results of a Seven News/ReachTEL poll that showed a change in leaders from Abbott to Turnbull would convert a 10 point LNP deficit into a 10 point lead.

Do people not understand they are voting for a party not a person? That the LNP ideologies that garner so much bad press would not change, only the way they are presented?

Abbott has demonstrated an unprecedented level of buffoonery with his 'captain's choices' but by and large they are a reflection of his residence in Pleasantville and don't affect anyone, except the paid parental leave scheme he jettisoned and even that will be replaced by a family payment scheme (supported by the LNP) that will likely still be funded by the tax on big business.

So the crazed ramblings of the Mad Monk might be replaced by the dulcet tones of King Malcolm but the song will remain the same, just not so off-key.

Unfortunately, bipartisan politics are a thing of the past except in times of national emergency, etc.

The ALP or LNP could have a 3-year run as the single greatest government in the history of democracy and the other side would be making it their life's work to hang shit on it while simultaneously trying to reinvent the wheel.

For Malcolm to become king those dulcet tones need to warble a tune closer to the
Institute of Pulic Affairs liking.

The more cynical amongst us consider this to be the case even when we get a change of government.

As Chris Uhlman relayed from a senior LNP MP on 7.30 Report last night, who do you think Bill Shorten would rather see win a leadership spill?

The cyclical outrage when there's a spill is like death and taxes.

I still remember mum being outraged when she came home from shopping and was told Paul Keating had turfed Bob Hawke.

"I didn't vote for Paul Keating!"

You didn't vote for Bob Hawke either. You voted for Gordon Bilney.

Rinse-repeat across all walks of life with the Gillard-Rudd and then Rudd-Gillard spills. And it will happen again if Turnbull gets his revenge for losing to Abbott in '09.

Bizarre.

i wonder how long the current system of government has to live? history shows new methods will develop, i for one am disillusioned with the current style. however there is no way to stop government from decending into putrid popularity contests i.e kevin 07.

This. We think our PM's are like American presidents

Politicians need to understand that they are elected to represent their electorate in parliament, not to represent their party. All parliamentary votes must be conscience votes - voting along party lines regardless of the electorate's wishes is ridiculous.
It is what Nick Xenophon projects so well - that he represents his electorate in parliament.

Nick Xenephon is a senator, so represents the whole of South Australia. Sarah Hanson-Young is also a senator, so represents all South Australian asylum seekers.

That's fine if you are an independent, but if you're aligned to a major party then you are expected to take the party line and support your electorate within those lines. Although Steve Georganas is said to have lost Hindmarsh because his constituents did not support his views on gay marriage.

Nick Xenophon is an independent senator (Paul Keating's infamous 'unrepresentative swill') so can make decisions based on the needs of SA.

Liberal or Labor...I would vote for a Paul Keating

The issue is what will replace parliamentary democracy? The closest we have got are the facist and communist governments of the mid 20th century.

The tipping point will come when a party starts doing what's best for the people and not for the leaders. Iceland and to a far lesser extent Greece are interesting case studies.

I get that. I just don't think it is ideal.
I had cause to lobby a NT CLP senator many years ago on a certain issue. His response was that he had many submissions along similar lines, essentially agreed with the issues raised but would vote opposite because his party told him too.
