I'm actually the opposite. I find his Footy ramblings irritating because they are so often overthought and overwrong, but I agree with him totally on this:

Trump is a narcissistic bellend, but the way these people are "protesting" now, well too late. Suck it up. Protest when he actually does something. Vote him out at the next election. There were actually people protesting in Melbourne and Sydney as well.... I mean what the hell were they hoping to achieve? Idiots.

I think he tries his guts out on the footy posts. Disagree or not from post to post but the dude is *thinking* and not afraid to throw up a left, right and center field theory all at once and with something more than approximating evidence most times.

I think the protests - the Women's marches specifically - are about right in temperature. kudos to the organizers in the US who mobilized that many people with no arrests AFAIK - phenomenal and indicates this is more Martin Luther King than "Occupy Wall St". to be clear I have no time for the 150-1500 masked anarchists campaignering about before the inauguration, and with one million or more marching on better grounds I understand well why Trump would want to focus attention on a tiny group of tools. Won't be/don't be fooled by that attempted sleight of hand.

I also think I made better use than Janus of the election-as-a-game image. There was a first quarter, which Trump unexpectedly won. Game on!

As for here, Trump is seen as part of an international trend including Brexit, so that emboldens our own bellends: Hanson, Christensen, Dutton, Cori, the spectre of Abbott in the background... we are protected to an extent by mandatory voting but I'm all for pre-empting debate by saying "this is where the bloody centre is, **** off with your loony imported alt-right and 'alternative facts' FFS". If nothing else it sends a signal to the Libs that the return of Abbott or the far right would be electoral suicide because even Shorten, while fairly vanilla, is not vilified to the extent Hilary was, and even right wingers concede the next level, Tanya and Albo are decently competent (and politically locked in to the horrible status quo onrefugee policy).

I am very close to tl;dr again which I promised not to do again today. Enough from me!! Cheers.

Yes, it is thoroughly bizarre. Surely they have more self awareness than that? They sung of and appealed to the working stiffs, the simple men, those who had fallen on hard times through no fault of their own, the straight white boys who played sports in high school who ended up with the straight white girls who were the cheerleaders...

Not really, you have had 30+ years of both sides of politics in the US embracing free trade deals, globilisation, free movement of capital offshore, fast money, rhetoric, do bugger all that doesn't work anyway, do nothing full stop and even stopped talking about the issues - just give up, and since 1990 none of the massive productivity gains made by US corporations, mostly driven by technological advancements, have been passed on to workers and real wages haven't grown.

In Oz, first under Hawke and Keating and then Howard there was a reasonable split of productivity gains between labour and capital and real wages grew at reasonable rates. In the US I have never heard a politician talk about a fair share of productivity gains going to workers. It's almost like productivity is a dirty word - or dirty to talk about sharing the spoils of productivity gains. The last few years in Oz real wages have stagnated, more because our productivity gains have stagnated rather than a big swap from labour to capital.

Trump offered these people some hope and change - almost like Obama did to other groups. It might be all bullshit, it probably wont happen, but its better than being completely ignored and saying you can't fight progress. Clinton didn't even campaign in Democrat heartland state of Wisconsin, she took their votes for granted - and lost the state just like the other industrial states of Michigan, Pennsylvania and Ohio . Trump might not bring the jobs back, but he might be able to embarrass and bully companies into not leaving for Mexico and other free trade areas eg Ford's decision post election not to open a plant in Mexico. It might not bring the glory days back, but it might stop the complete shutdown of manufacturing towns. As Bruce said at his presser before his concert last night, there was easy pickings for Trump. Bruce has had some massive productivity gains since the early 1980's, but he remembers the hard slog when he didn't have much, and the most he ever had to spend was $10k on a car after he had some chart singles success in late 1980, early 1981 with Hungry Heart.

“Plenty of good people voted for Donald Trump on the basis that I’ve written about for 30 years, which was the de-industrialisation of the United States and globalisation, and the technological revolution hit many people very very very very hard,” he said. He said the economic recovery had not benefited everyone. “It makes you easy pickings for a demagogue, which I believe Donald Trump is, with some very powerful statements,” Springsteen said. “I hope he succeeds, if he can bring those jobs back I hope he does. “If he can get a big infrastructure program going that will get people hired, I hope that that happens, I hope he keeps some of his promises.”

"Hillbilly Elegy" - JD Vance on this subject. It's a book, not a song. Sadly I have a long list and can't get to it soon enough.

Ah those Nazis.

There was a d*ckhead wearing a red t-shirt emblazoned with a swastika prancing around a block of shops on Grand Junction rd, Rosewater some years back, ( I think it was the early 90's ).
An older bloke of southern European appearance came out of one of the smaller shops, and beaked him with a broom handle. :thumbsu:
There was blood everywhere, and from memory said t-shirt wearer was arrested not long after by the police, and probably got beaked again in the cells. ;)

I reckon Albo would've beaten Turnbull last year. Bill Shorten has the charisma of a stobie pole.

the right would have never allowed a smack-down-all-comers Albo & Tanya ticket. Not entirely sure why Albo & Bill, or even a ground breaking "Triumvirate" wasn't an option. and not going to speculate as I am limiting myself to three sentence posts for the rest of the day ;)

I lean a tad to the right, as my 2 pinko mates on the site would no doubt agree ;), but Talkbull has zero personality, and if it's at all possible Billy Shorthose may have even less.

In my humble opinion Australia desperately needs another Keating, regardless of which side of the political fence he comes from. :thumbsu:

He's still alive. Should get him back:

Well, someone was asking for more campaigner and you can't get any more campaigner than him.

I loved his campaignerishness, because it was done with a greater purpose in mind.

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Based

All sound stupid, except perhaps the 4th one.
Apparently based is a word reclaimed by American rapper Lil B;

"Lil B and music critics refer to his rapping style as "based", a word that Lil B also uses to describe a positive, tolerant lifestyle. "Based" is a reclaimed word, as described by Lil B in Complex

“Based means being yourself. Not being scared of what people think about you. Not being afraid to do what you wanna do. Being positive. When I was younger, based was a negative term that meant like dopehead, or basehead. People used to make fun of me. They was like, ‘You’re based.’ They’d use it as a negative. And what I did was turn that negative into a positive. I started embracing it like, ‘Yeah, I’m based.’ I made it mine. I embedded it in my head. Based is positive.”"

So Doctor Feel may be the Based Doctor but this guy is the Based God

"Yeah, I'm based." He says.

Nah, saying that you yourself are based is not based. He's the anti-based.

The title of based is given, never taken.

He was the Irish Catholic hater from central casting. Pity all the Saint Paul's Cathedrals are Anglican - he must really hate that.
Haha and the dismissal of Gough - which he calls a coup - festered away for 8 years before payback was possible. He did say to the opposition when Treasurer - invoking catholic/christian imagery - "From this day onwards, Howard will wear his leadership like a crown of thorns, and in the parliament I'll do everything to crucify him.".
