Part of the new modern touchy feely democracy where everyone can have their say so that they feel they are being listened to by politicians. Its the facebook, twitter social media thing. Not a fan of it, but something has to be done because about 80% of politicians are either lawyers, or unionists, or professional political advisers ie only have worked for the party and/or politicians and they have a limited understanding of the real world.

This is why I'm extremely interested in how Donald Trump works out. He doesn't play by these rules.

Citizens Jury. What a ******* stupid idea that was.

I'm pretty close to the whole process and I can tell you the greens worked over every single person on the jury in a big way. It was never going to get up.

The actual information provided was very solid. I will disclose that Marshall constantly stonewalled the whole process. He and Jay were meant to fly to various nuclear dumps around the world and tour them and discuss with engineers and experts, however Marshall constantly pulled out at the last second and rescheduled. He did this up to ten times and eventually Jay bit the bullet and went over without him.

He's a useless campaigner is Marshall.

That said, if it went to referendum I reckon it would have passed. The information campaign would have been huge. The conservative figures for revenue this thing would bring in are staggering. Would transform the state. Jay actually had some great ideas for it all too, including putting away large chunks for investment or lowering the retirement age in this state.

For it to have not got through thanks to concerns about project costs and timelines is hilarious. The return on investment for this thing is astronomical.

It was always going to fail if you had half decent thinking people because you were asking people to make a commitment for 100,000 years and accept toxic poisonous shit from around the world and the word of politicians that it was all hunky dorey. Look at the privatization of electricity. That was 200 year lease and so many promises were made how great it would be and look at consequences almost 20 years later and how few of promises actually happened.

I'm not totally against the concept, I've had a few long conversations about this with Power Raid who has a significant interest in a uranium deposit in WA, and its potential benefits, but it should have been a 5 year education process lead by scientists, not politicians, or lawyers, or unionist or professional political advisers, and those scientist should have been directed to answer ever technical question the public have, at multiple forums and on multple platforms over the 5 years. Jay wanted a quick answer, and that answer to be yes. That was the real problem with all this.

Genuine question. Was there much discussion re accountability for decisions made. I ask simply because if people wish to have extensive input in decision making then they must accept the consequences of those decisions.

i have a serious interest in this type of discussion having been involved in state and federal Ag politics and immediate family members involved in both sides of the two major political parties.

As an aside, I'm stuffed if I know why any sane person (egos aside) would want to become involved in party politics - grubby

Not that I recall, because the major examples have been constitutional changes that perhaps have longer term impacts where accountability can't be measured yet. It's not like any individuals are accountable for harmful decisions in the current system at any rate.

When it has been used to the most practical effect was probably in Ireland in 2013 where a proposed change to the constitution would allow same sex marriage. The process involved both 33 elected politicians and 66 citizens chosen by lot, rather than just regular citizens alone, which diffused the distrust (both ways). Experts and citizen opinions were heard by this council and a recommendation was eventually to be passed by both chambers of government before going to a referendum. Ireland of all countries, with their deep religious roots, voted yes to this change.

Contrast this to something like our proposed SSM plebiscite which absolves the elected representatives from any accountability and would produce a divisive, slogan-driven campaign. Consultative democracy processes have been proven to reduce divisiveness and tensions around sensitive issues and politics.

Not sure how I can relate this to what SA is doing though since I know little about it.

yep, I'm proudly in the uranium camp and our little operation alone will equate to reducing 10% of Australia's CO2 emissions, with the full target being a reduction by 50%.

currently I have "no conflict of interest" re what happens in SA but boy I wish we had. I'm currently in the "dumb" side of uranium and simply digging it up.........proudly WAs first uranium mine in 4 decades.


What I wish for is a ban on selling uranium and the requirement to:
- enrich uranium
- produce nuclear fuel rods
- transport
- lease (not sell)
- cool
- recycle
- then store

This could be achieved for zero govt investment and create a centre of excellence in uranium, nuclear power, nuclear medicine, reprocessing and material science.

The word uranium waste is not very accurate as uranium "waste" is extremely valuable and the only source for many elements used in nuclear medicine, the renewable energy industry and electronics. It also happens to be the fuel for gen IV reactors, meaning the 100,00 year thing is probably 30-100 years.

Imagine the blue and white collar jobs by being the capital of the world's nuclear energy and medical industry? Sadly though, all we do is dig it up and say goodbye to tomorrow's most valuable resource. oh well.....

Watching ESPN's 30 for 30 OJ Simpson: Made in America on SBS the last 2 Monday nights and I'm half way thru part 3 of 5 parts. It was shown on ESPN over 7 or 8 days in June. Just got to the arrest part after driving the white Bronco all across LA. **** the back story of Simpson, LA and the LAPD and it's treatment of Afro Americans, Simpson and his wife Nicole has been comprehensive. I am looking forward to seeing the next half about how the trial goes.

It puts into perspective the reaction of people the cops and the media around this wild circus that seemed to transfix American for over a year.

Just got to the arrest part after driving the white Bronco all across LA. **** the back story of Simpson, LA and the LAPD and it's treatment of Afro Americans, Simpson and his wife Nicole has been comprehensive. I am looking forward to seeing the next half about how the trial goes.

It puts into perspective the reaction of people the cops and the media around this wild circus that seemed to transfix American for over a year.
