That Trump Merry Christmas photo made me think of posting this great Christmas song because I will probably forget it next week. In 1963 Darlene Love had a big hit with Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home) but Phil Spector had written her out of credit for singing the huge hit He's a Rebel, she sag it but put on the record it was sung by the Crystals.

David Letterman wasn't much of a fan of Christmas and novelty songs but loved this one and decide to use it on his show in 1986 and invited Darlene Love back each year to sing it and it got bigger and bigger. He helped re-kick start he career after struggling to get work as a singer in the 1970's and 1980's. I looked forward to her signing it each year.

The 1986 version

The 2014 version and last edition as Letterman finished up in May 2015.

This video of Paul Shaffer explaining how it came about and lots of different yearly versions showing how it got bigger.

At the start of the year I watched on ABC the 2014 Academy Award winning doco 20 Feet From Stardom about backing singers who had great voices, but never quiet made it for one reason or another. Usually black female singers. The one that got screwed the most was probably Darlene Love by Phil Spectator. He stole her recordings put it on other groups/artists records and she never got the credit or the $$$ for it.

It was Darlene and a couple of other black girls in a group called the Blossoms that in the early 60's changed how US pop and rock groups recorded songs with backing vocalists. So many great singers who had a bit of success and then never made it for some reason or another. The way Darlene dug her self out of exploitation by Spectator and others, to be inducted into the Rock n Roll hall of Fame in 2011 is a great story. All the great bands and singers have lent on these backing singers to help get that great sound on their hit records.

Also featured are 3 ladies I've heard of Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer and Judith Hill. Many others in there. Opened my eyes a bit to how they dont get the credit but they are an integral part of some artists success.

There was a full version on you tube but it was taken down.

Here is the official trailer

and here is a pirated version looks like taken from filming a TV and misses part of the doco

2 days and 2 BBQ's, i think i'm getting a bit sick of them but my mate did come up with something, Tomato, mustard and Sriracha chili dipping sauce. :thumbsu:

I just rewatched TFA tonight. It didn't grow on me, but nor did it get worse.

She knows everything and succeeds in everything. She has a small moment of weakness but other than that shes damn near indestructible. Unlike Jyn, she hasn't been trained to be a warrior. She's grown up alone collecting junk, yet is an excellent pilot, mechanic, fighter, duelist, marksman, and force user. Her tough exterior is never challenged, she has less depth to her so far than Rambo. The following exchange summed it up in a nutshell.

EDIT; corrected quote from IMDB

Han Solo: You might need this.
[passes a blaster to Rey]
Rey: I think I can handle myself.
Han Solo: I know you do. That's why I'm giving it to you. Take it. You know how to use one of those?
Rey: Yeah. You pull the trigger.
Han Solo: Little bit more to it than that. You got a lot to learn.

Except there isn't and she doesn't need to, after that she hits everything she shoots at.

Except the part she completely forgets about the safety like20 minutes later

I thought TFA was average, I haven't thought about it once since I saw it. Was pretty unremarkable. It was less space opera and more typical action movie. Suppose it broadens the appeal, but I wouldn't have thought that was ever the issue.

In hindsight, like Phantom Menace, it just took things in the wrong direction.

Even if 8 and 9 are great, they will be great movies following a shit origin that TFA burdened them with.

I thought I would be smart and get to the shops at 9am yesterday. Elizabeth Town Centre was packed even at that time.

Wrapping Xmas presents sucks big time. I am sure there is an art to it.

TFA is a really good movie. That hasn't changed. Though I'm glad that Rian Johnson is directing episode 8 as I think he'll take a few more risks.
Agree characters like Kylo are just different and a great refresh on a Vader archetype.

I think most people who didn't like it took it as a story of the death star 2.0, which it really shouldn't be.

Modern technology has really fleshed these characters out. Lucas while he did a fantastic job was hampered by the tech available to him.

That Vader scene in rogue 1 is what Vader is. Lucas couldn't produce a scene like that in the originals.

Vader was very intimidating in the original trilogy

Hence why I said Lucas did a fantastic job with the tech available to him.

But that rogue 1 scene is as intimidating as I have seen Vader.
