There are plenty of ‘finals hardened’ teams who don’t win Grand Finals.

Geelong, Port are some current examples.

Bulldogs and St Kilda in the late 00’s, Freo in the early 10’s.

Melbourne weren’t much of a finals hardened team before sweeping last years finals series.

The Lions had a huge opportunity in 2020 and butchered it. Lost in last years prelim to the team who got belted in the Grand Final.

The Lions are a really good side. Are they are great team?

Hardly facepalm comments. Thread is 5 years old. If it’s taken half a decade for the baggers to finally come good, those original comments must’ve been fairly on the mark. It’s not like Carlton were coming back down from flag contention prior to 2017 either :drunk:

I think Carlton's talent is over rated and there is not much of it. A fading Cripps, a negative Mick Martin style FB, one very good young Mid and a capable forward is pretty much it.

They need a massive clear out and fire sale to begin a thorough rebuild.

A better comparison for the Blues would be with the Roos, Dons and Pies.
This comment is ageing beautifully.

Blues have insane talent and arguably the most talented team in the comp going forward. Just need to actually develop the youth and develop an attractive game plan. Lions are a few years ahead of the Blues but I suspect the Blues will be on top of the Lions in 3-4 years IMO.
From late 2018. Let's see how this pans out. Think this could be carltons year to unseat the lions

Lmao. The arrogance.

Who have you beaten?

Sydney.

Lost to Freo.

Daylight.

Wait until you play the entire top 8 before you start acting like you can match it with the Dees & Co.

Carlton matches up really well against the Demons, and struggle in the heat/humidity of QLD/WA. No arrogance at all, cake.

I agree many finals hardened teams don't win premierships.

I also don't think Brisbane has been a top 2 side in any of the last few years (even though we may have finished 2nd on the ladder), and have been beaten by the eventual Grand Finalists in each of the last three years. I feel as though that's been an accurate representation of where we've been ranked in those seasons. This year is the first year we're probably the second best side (so far anyway).

Even as we were finishing top 4, it always felt like this year and next year were always going to be our best shot at a flag.

Carlton's record so far

Other than beating an underdone 7th and almost being overrun against 8th, there's nothing much else to write home about.

You'd think it'd make sense to wait until you've played and won against the best before you start talking "I'd rather the Dees at the MCG" type s**t, but then again, that's not the Blues way.

We've really got a cellar dweller supporter making recommendations about Carlton's perceived ceiling...

8-2 and unbeaten in Victoria thus far with the worst injury list in the league (other than WCE). Haven't yet played 4 of the top 8, and also haven't played 2 of the bottom 3 to boost percentage.

We haven't played 2 of the bottom 3 either. So what?

80% of your wins are from sides 9th and below.

That's all well and good, but not for the chest beating going on in this thread.

Wait until you've actually done something before you start comparing yourselves to Brissy let alone Melb.

"Haven't yet played 4 of the top 8"... and you lost to 1. That's the first 5 teams in a row still unproven against. Settle down.

2 from 3 against top 8 sides is still a fairly handy start.

You're making it seem like Brisbane is a superteam. Relax, they've done some pretty good things to date during the regular season but have floundered when the heat is on in finals.
