How many KO’s we had from attempted smothers prior to Brayshaw … I can’t recall any … actually high marking leading with the knee would involve way more risk than a smother imo …
From attempted smothers? Not all that many.

From head high shoulder charges? Loads.

Not sure if this is the thread for this...

* Among changes is the ‘Brayden Maynard’ rule. From 2024, if a player leaves the ground in an attempt to smother, it will be deemed careless conduct at a minimum, “unless the player has taken all reasonable steps to avoid that high contact and/or minimise the force of that high contact (for example, by adopting a body position that minimises the force of the high contact)”.

* The sub rule will continue, but clubs will now name an extended bench of five players (an increase from four) and three emergency players. Each team's sub will then be confirmed 60 mins prior to the match.

Was hoping the sub would be gone and simply 5 on bench.

But I think we used it well last season, especially with Dow.

I don't like it from a players point of view but we will have quite a few players on the fringe of selection that could really have an impact coming on as the sub later in games.

I feel we will use it to our advantage and hoping we don't need to use it to cover" in game "injuries too often.

So glad they scrapped the straight arm ruck rule. Will be an advantage to stronger rucks such as Pittonet.
By far the best rule change the AFL has made. There was nothing worse than seeing a wayward bounce from an umpire landing on one of the ruck's heads and that ruck using a straight arm to protect himself and getting called for a block.

can someone please explain to me what "whistling from the interchange bench" means?
Apparently it was “excessive whistling” "from the interchange bench” by coaches and other club staff - probably to try and get players attention for interchange, etc, and my guess distracting in some cases for those trying to officiate with their whistles.

Not sure if mentioned earlier in the thread but the in the back rule is basically non-existent now. Tackle a player from behind, drive in him into the ground - play on ?
