I kno this has been done to death but one last question on something I don't understand and which has got minimal airplay.

On the replay of Katich and Watson returning to the crease Simon Katich walks out of his crease. However, the wide angled down the ground replay that has been shown a few times on 9, shows Katich make this move out of the crease before the bails are dislodged.

As such, why wasn't Katich out, as leaving the crease would constitute crossing. Or is there some rule that I am unaware of on this issue.

because he got back to his crease first and they did cross. end of story

Crossing means passing the batsmen. So Watson would need to pass Katich. For this case however, even if Watson passed Katich, I think he would still need to ground his bat before Katich.

I'm with Bomaz - this needs a closer look. I tried to add a comment to the Hun's Michael Horan article last night on same topic. If at the time of taking off the bails Katich is out of crease, and Watson is in, then Katich should be batsmen given out. Katich, realising there has been a monumental stuff-up, starts to walk and wanders out of his crease. Watson stays put. The hard thing to line up is whether Katich is in crease or out of crease at exact moment bails are dislodged. If they are both in crease, then Wato is out - because they had not crossed (ie Katich first back in crease). But if Katich has carelessly left crease at moment of bails being dislodged, he should be out.

The down the ground replay which nine have shown about 3 times clearly shows Katich shuffle. Put this together with the other replay (when it stays long enough) and Katich's only movement is out of the crease. I'm very confident Katich had left the crease when the bails were removed. It'd be nice however if channel 9 showed enough of a replay so as we can all see if this did occur.

You make a good point, but they did analyse this afterwards. Fact is Katich didn't quite make it out of his crease before the bails were dislodged. Again it was a matter of a second or two, but Watson was correctly given out. Crossing had not occurred before the bails had been dislodged.

They did in the end, about an hour after the incident. Showed side on replay at both ends in sync to establish that Katich had not quite left the crease before they took the bails off.
