It’s interesting peoples running profiles. I have a friend that was a high level cyclist who took up running as it was less expensive. Basically “just runs” and only really averages 5km on his runs. Despite this his fastest ever 5km (17:49) was done during the Puffing Billy run (13.5km) and his best 10k (36:58) & HM (1:18:30) times came during a marathon that he ran 2:46:48 with a stress fracture in his foot.

I’m the same. My 1km “sprints” are barely quicker than my 5km splits which are barely quicker than my 10km splits 😂
Some people just have 'it' aerobically. There's an Australian guy, Jimmy Whelan, who has just transferred from professional cycling back to running and dropped a 62-minute half marathon first race.

Granted their training is a lot different - 4-5 hours of aerobic work with longer threshold work, there's a decent amount of crossover. I rarely do bike sessions but I was surprised at how much distance I could cover over 40-60 mins.

Yeah I’m finding with all my cross-training (4 hours ish of swimming and 10 hours of cycling per week) that my aerobic capacity is starting to far exceed the local muscular endurance of my legs. HR while walking around is also now lower than what my resting was a few months ago.

Another week down, little crook this weekend so an easier long run. Still planning for own Marathon in 3 weeks, motivation is very low;

84km in total

M - no run
T - 8 km fartlek session
W - 16km moderate pace
T - 8km easy
F - 18km tempo run
S - 7km easy
S - 25km easy long run

What are favourite workouts and sessions?

I was convinced I'd hate doing threshold sessions and interval workouts until I completely changed my routine and targeted half marathons and now I love them. Biggest serotonin boost afterward.

Love a long (15-20km) tempo run.

Wednesday mid-long run is fun and effectively an easy workout.

I really like track intervals/fartlek. Mostly cos the closest synthetic track is 2 hours from me so it’s a bit of a novelty 😂😂😂
I rotate Moose, Mona and Portsea fartlek sessions over 4 weeks (the 4th being a bit of a deload and consisting of 10 minutes at threshold then 30” repeats with near full recovery).

Nursing some bike specific pressure injuries so have some of my bike minutes to running this week and had what I’d imagine is my biggest week ever with 59.95km (might do a short brick session tomorrow to tick over 60km lol).

By chance I’d say 50-55km was on trails, and I’m sitting on 944m elevation gain (of which around 850m was from this morning’s run).

It’ll still take another week or 2 before I can start logging 4+ hour rides again, so hopefully my shins don’t explode and I can consolidate this running volume then build back up on the bike again.

Motivation is very low right now given my race was postponed until 2027, the last 3 weeks i've been reducing weekly volume down from 100km to mid 60's. From there i will come up with a new weekly program and maybe build to half marathon in 3-4 months time.
