We didn't offer enough that's blatantly obvious it all come down to how much you rated rozzee port rated him more than us simple really

Or they had better negotiators and were prepared to lose starting 18 players to get the job done.

Which players were you prepared to lose last year to get it done?

i would have traded Lynch and Sloane last year (and Atkins, Hartigan) but i understand that the Club would have been more concerned with the PR backlash from losing more players, albeit deliberately.

We had a golden opportunity to get one or two out of Lukosius/Rankine/Rozee but too conservative as usual.

I've been onboard with Pyke but confess I was close to sack the coach after the Hawthorn Rd.1 and North Melbourne losses early where we were comprehensively outcoached and beaten by very ordinary teams.

We kind of re-invented ourselves and got some good wins by playing a more contested game style, however this relies heavily on winning contested ball (of course) and clearances. And also if you are a forward, doesn't really help you as we just move the ball forward and kick to positions rather than players. No wonder our forwards are struggling. But after the NM loss I was close on giving AFL away. We changed and credit to Pyke as we were on track to do a "Melbourne" this year early on. We've raked it back a bit but we are an average team playing poorly. And clearances.....we were absolutely spanked on Saturday by Carlton. Spanked.

In the second half of games we go missing. Big time. What's that about?

For me Pyke doesn't have the answers and we are an ordinary team. The assistants are maligned on the board, a new coach gets to say who he wants, and will bring in the assistants he wants to work with.

So for me it's the coach goes first. The new coach decides who stays and goes. Coaches, as well as players.

Pyke didn't get to pick his own assistants, are you certain the next coach will? That's the main reason I don't want him to be sacked.

As the coach he makes the final call, I wouldn't give a toss, what the assistants say if I don't agree with it, it would be my way or the highway, do you think Mick Malthouse or Lee Matthews would do as their assistants wanted

That's not how it actually works though. The club still has to entice people to come over. There are only really two ways to go about this. One is to hire a senior coach who inspires confidence, with enough industry contacts to bring over some talent (e.g. Walsh). The other way is to open the cheque book. Take a look at Adelaide's current list of assistants. Do you really think we are a club that likes to spend money?

Hire some like Lee and most assistants would know they can have input but his word is final, as with Clarko, Roos or how Pagan or clarko was, hire a newbie and you get a different feel

And most assistants would love to work with those suggested against say Stewy Dew

But lets be honest the biggest part of the club is the thing we spend $10 Million on, that is the biggest part of winning or losing

You would have to physically gag the assistants to stop them talking to the players.

Or do you think it's like under 12s where everyone gathers round the coach for 5 minutes before and after training and that's the only time players get spoken to?

You should ask the same question to Damien Hardwick and Nathan Buckley

Not sure if you are coaching under 12, but I rang AA after having the same discussion on here, about the coach making the final call. Bicks said after coaching the AFC, he confirmed the coach 100% makes the final call on games, particularly selection

I bet it’s being spent, just in the wrong places. Campo would be on $500k and then a bit more. We had Harper as head of footy before being shifted sideways, I bet his salary didn’t drop much. We’d have plenty of people doing the most average work being paid league leading rates. It’s the only way you end up with rookie coaches on every line and a failed fitness manager as footy head honcho. I doubt we’re not spending the money, it’s just that 40% is being pissed up against the wall.

I wouldn't be surprised if Steve Saunders is the second highest earner behind Pyke. Though personally I think he is worth it
