Watching tonight, it felt a miracle that no player was seriously injured on the SCG playing surface. Not since the early days of Docklands Stadium have I seen such a diabolical playing surface, apparently due to a music concert several months earlier. It was a complete hazard to all on field.

Without significant further improvement, in the name of OHS can the AFL seriously send the Swans and Dockers out to play on that in 9 days time?

That last kick by Blakey where he slipped was damning. That could have been the game right there through no fault of the Lizard. Lucky he didn't do his ankle.

Yeah you could tell some players were hesitating to even try and run or turn on it after the first quarter.

When players were adjusting how they played purely due to the condition of the turf, the problem is undeniable and if the AFL were a serious professional competition the game almost shouldn't have been played tonight at all.

It wasn't acceptable 15 years ago at Docklands, it's certainly not acceptable today.

Allowing a Andrea Bocceli concert two weeks into the season was one of the dumbest AFL related decisions in recent memory.

Its an event that could be held in a cow paddock somewhere and it wouldn't have made any difference.

The playing surface is a disgrace - and most of the stands needs to be bulldozed as well. The SCG has fallen way behind the times.
Playing surface is rubbish. Stands are outdated. First few rows have limited visibility as they were designed to look over the white fence, not the taller digital screens. To access some of the gates you have to walk around Allianz Stadium, you can’t even go for a basic walk around the SCG. View from the ground level is shocking.

I’ve probably been to about 15 grounds in the past decade and it’s by a mile the worst for spectators that I’ve been to.

The AFL have ticked off Engie Stadium since the get-go so doubt they bat an eyelid about the SCG
Look past the turf and see the environment both clubs operate in. The AFL have next to no sway up here, so it doesn't surprise at all. The turf issue at the SCG isn't a new one this season.

All comes across as "you'll get what you're given and you'll be happy with it", basically.

The fact the Swans/AFL have been here for as long as they have and don't appear to have more influential footy fans in certain positions who care or can do anything about this issue, says it all, really.

The AFL can say no concerts one month before the season starts til the season ends, or the Swans dont play their games there.

Send them back to Olympic park.

They also dont get to set up turfs for the cricket season until after the football season is done.

Gabba is considered an even more run down and degraded stadium isnt it?

AFL has no issue there either.
Nothing AFL can do about the gabba, it's been a political shitshow around the Olympics and the outcome is a new stadium for 2033 onwards. $$.

The Gabba surface is chef's kiss, some of the best groundskeeping in the country. The stands themselves are outdated and I believe not fit for use beyond 2030?
