Re: The SEN Saga - Please post opinions here

I actually though Matt Hardy was okay - reasonably funny bloke, and a welcome break from some of the know-it-all journos and inflated egos of ex players who get a gig on SEN.

It was interesting that he was apparently taking time off for an operation, as he told his listeners. But a week later, listeners read in the paper that he's leaving.

Well I guess it's better than the old 3AK days when broadcasters would read that they were about to get the flick on the internet.

I doubt there will be a replacement for Hardy. The Huddo & Ox team seem to be working okay. Hardy may be suited to one of the Saturday morning sports shows on say a MMM.

Wouldn't be surpised if there are more changes at SEN - the question is, will they have the balls to sack a clown like Brownless, or will they lose even more talented broadcasters.

Will be interesting to see what they do on Saturday mornings with Ralphie Serge & The Big Man now gone. Knowing SEN management, I wouldn't be surprised if they give the slot to Lawn Bowls World.

Re: The SEN Saga - Please post opinions here

We can't really guess as to why Hardy left. Maybe he wants to get back into stand up again. I agree with pudding though. He made a welcome change and seemed popular with the others.

Schwartz is a genuine talent. It may not be too long before the big boys start sniffing around. If he leaves, they might be in a bit of trouble.

Oh, and Saturday mornings is being hosted by Liam Pickering and Mark Allan. It hasn't got a name yet.

Thank god.He was frigging boring.
The last few days have been enjoyable listening.

He wasn't too bad, but I think sometime there was too much comedy used by him when talking about sport and sometimes it came across as if it was something more akin to The St Kilda Football Club Comedy Show.

What a load of rubbish. Believe it or not, journos make mistakes.

Maher may not be best suited to breakfast, but his passion for sport is great, and his work on shows like Retrospective and The Insiders was very good.

Yeah, I am an apsiring jounalist and sports commentator myself and can atest to the fact that journos are not perfect people in any way yet some people expect to them to be perfect with everything.

Re: The SEN Saga - Please post opinions here

I'll be the first to say that I've found quite a number of things to be critical of SEN over the last couple of years. However, that has never stopped me actually listening to the station at least four hours every day.

Now I am over here living in Europe, and can honestly say that streaming SEN in onto my computer has been an absolute godsend.

Long live SEN.

Gotta agree with that, too. One of worst things about living overseas, is missing all the hype, whether it be grand final, brownlow, draft, or pre season etc. SEN gives us the hype, the news with the Aussie accent. While we can get abcasiapacific, it doesn't have a lot. It doesn't have the footy show, damn, nor does it have the grandfinal marathon, actually apart from the 5 games a week it gave us, it has s h i t e. Wow, I haven't seen the footy show for 6 years now. Long live SEN. We appreciate your here in Taiwan.

Re: The SEN Saga - Please post opinions here

Yeah, World Sport Overnight is some of the best listening.

I call in sometimes, Ben from Sunbury.

Re: The SEN Saga - Please post opinions here

Yeah, he's pretty good and rate him as a good football commentator as well although his general sports knowledge could be improved.

Re: The SEN Saga - Please post opinions here

still do some amazing things , was driving around from family to family on chrissie day and heard a number of times them playing episodes of the retrospective program. now this is a program that has not been on sen for many months now , thought if i waited long enough i might hear the insiders or the ring of fire but alas the powers that be are not that switched on.

but very strange that they would do this play shows that are obsolete at sen
but then who is to say they know what they are doing
do you know if they played any francis leach stuff ??

Re: The SEN Saga - Please post opinions here

I think all they played on Christmas Day was Retrospective.

One interview was with Rodney Eade which was more than a year old - at the time of the interview he had just got the Bulldogs job.

The bits and pieces I heard were actually good - which is why it is such a shame that shows like Retrospective and The Insiders are no longer.

In the daily Year In Sport show Matt Thompson does, they seem to have avoided The Afternoon Show (which Francis Leach hosted up until mid year) and The Run Home (which Dermie was apart of early in the year), from what I've heard.

Re: The SEN Saga - Please post opinions here

thank god hardy is gone. i guess he was just a regular joe like the rest of us....but b/c of this i think he felt the need to ask long questions. this might be the result of working with king of long questions Dermie.

i get the impression that SEN might be a revolving door for budding sports hosts/reporters.

i like mark allen and hope he gets a gig on the morning show at the expense of billy.

sad to hear serge and the big man going......loved serges segment on friday after the 6pm news on entertainment.

Re: The SEN Saga - Please post opinions here

I agree with your Peter.

It's is a place where aspiring sports commentators and presenters are given a grounding before moving on elsewhere.

You might be interested to note Francis Leach is now back in Sydney working at an FM music station.

Re: The SEN Saga - Please post opinions here

come on sen powers that be or those that make show decisions, today i heard a james hird interview that was so old it was a waste of time , why are we hearing the retrospective show which has not been on sen for months now, would 3aw play us steve price interviews if hinch was away.
( play the ring of fire if you must play old stuff that is not on sen anymore )
and to play matt hardy stuff is an insult to him , you cannot do the right thing by someone who was part of your best show ratings wise hands down yet you backdoor him by letting liam and co replay interviews where he speaks thats like taking blood from a stone after you have shown him the door.
when i was at sen i was repeatedly told to make sure things are fresh vibrant and not stale, to better to have people move on rather than be stale whoever is making show decisions is not following that.
yes i still listen and yes i might be still bitter but you can atleast get the thing halfway right
to play things that are defunct and not even from current staff is an insult to both parties .

Re: The SEN Saga - Please post opinions here

What SEN needs for all those 'awkward' timeslots (pretty much like the entire summer!) is some sort of networking or reciprocal broadcasting arrangement with sports stations around the world, to enable them to take in some fresh or even live sport-talk during the wee hours or non-prime time. A little bit like how the ComSat network operates for community radio stations around Australia, where a local station can fill their dead air with, say, a C&W show from the Dubbo station, or a Metal show from Toowoomba, or whatever.

Surely there would be British or American sporting stations, or at least select programs, like live EPL or NBA that can be taken on via satellite on the cheap. If there's issues with webcast conflicts, then temporarily cut that from SEN's own website stream.

It seems the station loses momentum in these weaker times, and the public tend to be very stubborn with their own radio preferences - when you've got them, it takes quite a bit to lose them, but if you haven't got them or lose them, it takes a hell of a lot more to get them (or get them back).

Re: The SEN Saga - Please post opinions here

if they ever get rid of tony schibecci then i will never listen again

he is the unsung hero of SEN along with the 4 diego's

Re: The SEN Saga - Please post opinions here

Before Schibecci began, SEN experimented with taking the TalkSport feed overnight - TalkSport is a UK sports/talk station. It wasn't bad, but I think people wanted a Melbourne voice, rather than a UK one overnight.

Whoever was working the panel over the weekend seemed to be very inexperienced. At the beginning of Born in the USA last night, while Ed Wyatt was reading the weather, his intro music started. Ed finishes the weather. His intro music stopped. They played an ad. Ad was cut. Intro music started again. I know mistakes get made, but for a commercial station it sounded an absolute shambles.

The other night someone screwed up the timing on Retrospective and it finished with around 10 minutes till the news. They filled the time up by playing 'Land Down Under' and 'Khe San' and other bits of music.

Re: The SEN Saga - Please post opinions here

dont think anyone does sport like 3aw at 6pm example just before on way home from work tuned into sen to hear end of some duncan armstrong baton interview from ages ago then heard the fill in liam pickering saying he wasnt even listening to it as he was getting pepsi at the 7 eleven next door , went to 3aw and their fill ins clinton and dean jones doing hard on anafl footballer who was in trouble..
dean jones doesnt seem to be a fill in who wants to just go and get a pepsi.
if it were a broadway show and the understudy was on or a footballer gets a game to replace the star full fwd do they treat it like a fill in..nothey do their best and try to do even better than the main cast
but at sen it seems that these fill ins just say play a few month old things and i will get a pepsi..get my point if the person in the studio doesnt want to listen to something why would we feel interested to.flicked back after 3aw was in ad to hear about a pub in fitzroy being number one pick up joint in town.
pudding the other night microphones were left on while the ads were playing and you just prayed that no one said any f words . sad sad run place i had hopes for it when i was there but dont think the powers that be give a todd bag about quality 24 / 7.
