Hey guys n girls,

Living in Melbourne, we're constantly told how big these games really are.

What goes on during that week?

I think its also the atmosphere around town and in the workplace, all the rivalries come to the fore and there is alot of bickering which IMO is a good harmless thing.

you guys havent won a CUB southern Derby

either have we but who is counting !!! :D

although it makes it hardy to get showdowns even !

So that's the real reason for the change! You know that you can't catch us in Showdowns, so you change the name. What's going to happen when we get an unassailable lead again? Are you then going to change it to the Toyota Home Town Challenge?

Here's to ever changing names then. ;) :D

It's not so much what goes on but the whole 8 year history of the thing.
To 'get' it you almost have to live in Adelaide and support Port or the Crows, plus understand how each of the SA teams entered the AFL.
There are very few supporters of either team who do not rate the Showdowns as the most important H&A games of the year. It has almost become a trademark that the games are close. Of the 16 Showdowns played there have only been a couple of blowouts. Interstate players in their first year at either club are consistently surprised at the noise and passion at these games. They soon learn that an important part of your football reputation in SA revolves around your performance in Showdowns. Coaches learn too. An important part of Garry Ayres demise was that he couldn't win one - a Riccuito led 'mutiny' in Showdown 15 gave the Crows their only win in his time there.
In the first 4 years we were neck and neck with wins. SA used to grind to a halt to watch it. Tickets were scalped, and Channel 7 used to rate off the meter. People would gather for Showdown parties and barbies like they were finals. In recent years though we have won 7 out of 8 which has taken some of the heat out of it.
It is a pity that more of these games haven't been shown interstate, likewise the WA Derbies. I understand that Channel 9 is broadcasting Showdown 17 live across all footy markets in 2005, which is long overdue.
