When it comes to WCE I am a self confessed football tragic. Do not get me wrong I try and maintain perspective and there are number of other teams that I look out for (even have a soft spot for) for instance Carlton (as few close friends barrack for them). However when it comes to WCE I am always very focused on how my team is playing.
When at the game or at the pub, watching an interstate game, I generally do not engage others in banter, even though at times I like most express my dismay at a rotten act or a bad decision (or so I thought). If someone has a go and trys to sledge I often do not react, well with few exceptions that is. A notable exception was during the half time of the Geelong game when a Geelong supporter got under my skin (at half time) and I was as close as I have ever been to actually throwing a first punch. This was very uncharacteristic of me as I am generally very placid type person. Anyway, why am I telling you all this? Well because of that incident I decided to stay home alone on Grand Final day and watch my team have its moment of glory! I was very well prepared I had my big screen tv a refreshement or two and a comfortable couch. It was game on!
The first quarter starteed with an arm wrestle and I like both teams was a bit nervous but you get that. At the end of the first quarter we were in front Ashley Hansen was doing well and nerves were somewhat soothed. Second quarter started and more positive signs why was I ever worried? Well I knew why. This is Sydney and those buggers never make things easy and I knew that today will be no different. As the halfway mark of the second quarter approached IT HAPPEND!!!
MY f#@$ing set top box froze! After all the preparations all I had coming from this fantastic tv was radio, well that and a still picture. At first I though this was Ch10 crap coverage but then as minute and then two passed the still picture remained and then I started searching for other faults. As I realised the set top box had issues I disconnected it and reconnected it. This fixed the problem and it was game ON!
Then five minutes later it happend again!
Then again....
Again and again 15 times it happend...
During all this time I still managed to see, Andrew Embley's goals, Quentin Lycnhes glove toss, Daniel Chick smother, handball, sheppard and tackles. I managed to see Hunter goal, Embley mark and the siren sound! And then fittingly it happend again the f#$@ing thing froze...
The only thing I did not see was Woosha, Judd and Cuz lift the cup. Why? Well the box was frozen.
Which brings me to my point (pardon the pun). Sometimes despite all the good preperation and all the careful planning something completely unexpected happens to throw your plans into disarray. It happend to WCE last year and it happend to Sydney this year it is how you handle the aftermath that really matters. WCE did it with aplom and won their 3rd premiership. I would love to Sydney give it an another crack as given the contests that we have had over the past years they too are now one of the teams I have a soft spot for. The only exception being that this is not because of my friends but because of the respect that they have earned from playing against us. Thank you Sydney as you have been an amazing champion in 2005 and you made it almost impossible for us to become the champion team of 2006.
Thats why I will always remember that SIREN and will never forget that two seconds later I had to reboot my set top box.
(Oh an people from Toshiba can expect to be hearing from me on Monday.)
