Mega Thread The Stats Thread

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Here is how I see it based on Grim's stats of the last 8 weeks.
Essendon have only played 1 top 8 team in those games, against Adelaide at Etihad & had 20 scoring shots to Adelaide's 35. They should have been totally demolished. Prior to these games they were beaten by the wooden spooner in Brisbane.

That table for uncontested footy is headed by many teams who finished outside the 8.

I think that if we just play true to form & if it was a H & A game for percentage, we would win this by 50 points plus pulling away but because it is a final, we may go into self preservation/defensive mode in the last. This game should be decided by 3/4 time.

Relax & enjoy our practice run for bigger & better challenges at the MCG the following week!
Oh great one. An insight into this weekend?

What to expect tonight

Lots of free kicks

The Cats have received the most free kicks in the competition AND have given away the most free kicks too. In Joel Selwood and Patrick Dangerfield they have 2 of the AFL's leading 3 free kick recipients. With our own Luke Parker 4nd in free kicks against, expect plenty of frees to the Geelong midfield tonight.

No easy possessions
Geelong have conceded the fewest number of disposals in the AFL, and tellingly have conceded the fewest number of uncontested possessions. Led by tackling machine Scott Selwood, the Cats have completed the most tackles in the AFL.

Forward pressure on our back line
The Cats are very strong in two pressure categories - tackles inside 50 and scoring goals from turnovers. The Cats have 6 players in the Top 30 for Tackles inside 50 (although only 5 are playing tonight). By comparison the Swans have none with Papley and Parker just outside in 35th and 43rd respectively. Expect plenty of pressure to be placed on our defenders as the Cats aim to lock the ball in their forward half, especially in the wet.

Plugging some numbers into the stats machine (no not SM) for tonight's game, some disturbing results have come up.

First, the Swans have the equal 2nd worst I50 differential in the league, tied with St Kilda and the Brisbane Lions. Most disturbingly, we've only averaged 49 inside 50s ranking 2nd last in the league.

Last week's tally of 42 inside 50s for (a season low) and 60 inside 50's conceded (an equal season high with R1 v West Coast) against an inexperienced Bulldogs team, resulting in a net -18 inside 50s would have lost most according to historical AFL stats.

Table 1: I50 differential

However, this has been masked somewhat by our forward rate conversion, led of course by the incomparable Lance Franklin and a notable improvement in goalkicking accuracy (12th last year).

The questions going into tonight's game then, are:
  • Can the Swans maintain their efficiently strong showing at either end of the ground?
  • Will that be sufficient enough to paper over the cracks over what has been an underperforming midfield so far in 2018, or will the likes of Kennedy, Hannebery and Jack need to lift and take advantage of a weakened Crows outfit.

Okay let’s go back losing the inside 50 count, kicking accurately and winning the game. Thanks.
Honestly I think this team is finished. Our midfield has well and truly fallen off a cliff and with Horse steering a broken ship I think we're destined to be sunk and then drown slowly.

How do these AFL player ratings determine a player has what looks like a negative quarter?
Eg Paply and Hayward have a -ve 3rd quarter.
Thanks

The main talk around North so far this year has revolved around the brilliance of Ben Brown, whose strong leading and accurate kicking has him sitting 4 clear of Luke Breust on top of the AFL goalkicking charts. He has undoubtedly been brilliant and deserves all the plaudits coming his way, and it is hard to argue that his form has helped North to a better position than most pundits were expecting at the beginning of the season.

However, if we take a closer look at the stats, we can see it is their defence that is contributing just as much, if not more to their success this year. They have conceded the 2nd least amount of goals, have the 2nd highest number of intercept possessions, and are the 2nd most miserly side when it comes to opposition's Inside 50 to goal conversion rate.

They have been led in defence by Scott Thompson who is posting intercept numbers that rank alongside noted intercept defenders Rance and McGovern.

Just like against Geelong, the Swans' midfielders will have to be careful not to bomb long to their smaller forwards because Thompson will be ready to intercept and launch counter attacks from the Kangaroos' back half.

Are North's stats skewed by the game they played against Gold Coast in torrential rain?

We do need to watch North but their opponents to date have been:
GC (13th) - loss
Saints (16th) - win
Melb (12th) - loss
Carl (18th) - big win
Hawks (4TH) - win
Port (6TH) - loss

The Hawk win was impressive but they got the jump & were up by plenty & were nearly overrun.
The Carlton win inflated those stats. Carlton were putrid that game.

Yes also they've played Carlton and St Kilda

It's a must win game & win by plenty we must because I can't struggle to see us beating the Hawks at the MCG tbe following week as it will be the "keepings off" style that we just don't get.

You mean the annual bestest coach in the league shows how bestest he is by schooling the worsest coach in the league.

Strengths
  • No surprises that Freo's main advantage lies in their 211cm ruckman Aaron Sandilands. The Docker rank in the Top 3 for hitouts, hitouts to advantage, hitouts to advantage rate (%), and clearance ratio (i.e. clearances / (clearances + opposition clearances)).
  • Perhaps because of their hitout advantage, the Dockers play one of the more uncontested styles in the AFL, ranking 3rd last in contested possession rate, 2nd in uncontested marks, last in tackles and also have conceded the most uncontested marks in the AFL.

Weaknesses
  • Forward line efficiency is poor - both their score rate per inside 50 and their goal rate per inside 50 ranks in the bottom 5 in the league. Again, their failure to apply pressure in the forward 50 is evident, ranking last in tackles inside 50.
  • They can be vulnerable in 1-on-1defensive contests, relying heavily on teammates to help. They rank 4th last in 1-on-1 defensive contests loss percentage with small defenders Nathan Wilson and Luke Ryan as well as midfielder Stephen Hill the major culprits.
