Agree a decent oven is better imo.
I mean how many kitchen gadgets do we really need .
One place I was staying at i either couldn't use the oven or no oven tray.
So cooked steak and thick chips in the fry pan worked well.
I put the deep fry outside.
Was going well till the dogs knocked it over.
One time.

Have stayed in a few apartments in Japan and not sure if cultural or a function of space or both but often kitchens are tiny and don't have ovens. More common to have small electric appliances like rice cooker, toaster oven etc. A couple times I've opened a steel door under the stove expecting to find an oven just to find cupboard space.
I'm a 'cold dead hands' NRA guy when it comes to having a proper oven and gas stove.
Maybe a cultural thing, unsure.
Would they have a Sunday roast ?
Maybe not .
They probably would need a stove to use a wok.
I stayed somewhere i could get the oven to work so I cooked my steak cut chips in the fry pan., worked well.
Most of the traditional hot cuisine is grilled, fried or made in broth so baking isn't a huge part of it. Meat other than fish was also a pretty recent introduction (19th century). These days they have just as much Western influence as we have Eastern so it's not like people are confused where bread and cakes come from. Biggest problem I've found is that while their small appliances are fine a lot of places aren't designed for big power draws, so if you decide to boil the kettle while you have the toaster oven and stove on you risk tripping the circuit breaker.
They've been regulars at the Jasmin over the years too.Pretty cool that the Indian cricket team visits the same Indian restaurant in Adelaide each tour and has for decades. I’ve been to the British on Raj restaurant and it’s definitely the best Indian cuisine ever had.
