My memory is reading something about it being used in the NFL.
Well, maybe it was the NFL then :p. I know I have definitely read about it happening somewhere.

Lip readers, that's why.

Lip reading is incredibly unreliable and inaccurate anyway especially as so many words have similar mouth movement, even professional lipreaders can only get around 30% right.

This is the exact reason NFL coaches do it though. Opposition teams did hire lip readers.

Edit: actually maybe it wasn't the NFL, it was somewhere though.

NFL I can totally understand as they're mic'd up and there's time to get the message out but in AFL and other codes? It's just stupid.

That's rubbish. Go talk to deaf people ( but very loudly ;) ) and they will be able to work on 75-80% contextual accuracy.

Mate, I am deaf :p

It helps when you can still hear them a bit but lipreading at the same time, thats when you get the most accurate results from trying it.

When you can't hear a thing and have no context to work with its very very difficult.

You won't be saying that when one of the AFL does in fact employ a professional lip reader to see what is being said in the coaches box. But in comparison to the NFL, it wouldn't be as useful. The NFL rely on play by play information, and changes in tactics can happen at the drop of a hat. The AFL it's much harder.

I have hearing loss and can pick up context. But yes you are right its easier if there is noise. I usually lip read when there is a lot of external noise.

But 30% is still a low figure.

Then again its not hard with some coaches

Longmire ' get that ****ing ****ing arggh spud off how dare he not ****ing follow the ****ing game ****ing plan ****ing campaigner'

Buckley ' that's it I'm ****ed, ring my agent and see what Gold Coast houses are for sale'

Don Pyke ' '

Beveridge ' ffs I ****ing tell them ffs to go down the corridor and ffs'

Just what i've heard from studies and stuff.

I can really only lipread if i can still hear someone but not enough to fully understand them, I read their lips and I it becomes clear.

A lot of deaf people out there who would be better at it than I am though, especially ones with worse hearing loss or don't wear hearing aids.

Drinking tea at a cafe is a ******* waste of money if you ask me, 4 bucks to put a tea bag in some hot water, that's ******.
Yep, which is why I only order it when I'm meeting my boss and he's paying.

I guess I could get juice.

How the media have to make a connection between Australia and any disaster or tragedy.

"Times Square is a huge tourist attraction for many Australians".

Seriously, how is that relevant?

Simonds Stadium. I don't care how many new stands you add, until you get wifi (or a working internet connection/reliable phone coverage would be handy, Telstra) you are still worse than a suburban football oval. What a shithole.

Hate that. Hoping our new stadium is good in that department

And all I ever worried about was were the pies hot

That makes me cringe.

But it's the ME mentality.

Thought I'd be nice and offer an employee a coffee. She pulled out a post-it and wrote a list of things and gave me a loyalty card to get stamped. Double-tall, 1 pump, toffee nut latte. Cmon now!

At least she wrote it down

The cost of a cup of coffee isn't a whole lot more than a cup of tea. Really all you are paying for is the cafe to have a coffee machine and for some floggo with a top knot to spend a minute or so frothing milk.
