Nice. I do the same with any change I have. All goes into a bit pot in my room at the end of the day.

I used to do that, but my wife was taking it out at a faster rate than I was putting it in!

I now keep any gold coins in my wallet for general use (which helps balance out the non-use of $5 notes) and the silver goes in the car or the bottom of the bag, or the desk drawer at work for drink/chocolate money.

A good one for saving - I NEVER, EVER spend a $5 note.

Any $5 note that comes my way goes in a cash tin in the bottom drawer - something in the vicinity of $900 in there now which will be bonus cash for a holiday I'm having later in the year.

This^^^

I do the same, and if you have the willpower, it is a great way to save.

- Clothes that are more than $30 I don't buy. Except if it's a hoodie ($40 limit) or jeans ($50 limit). Runners I'll tend to pay more for.
- Got LPG for my car a few years ago now. Huge savings... around $35 - $40 a week.
- Never had a gym membership. Never paid to go to the gym. Runs outside, weights at home, ride a bike.

I am gonna give this a go!

Thanks Illinois Nazi for the tip. :thumbsu:

The important thing is to NEVER make an exception. If all you have in your wallet is $5 notes then as far as you are concerned you have no cash. No "oh, I really need to just this once..." If you need cash and all you have is a $5, then visit an ATM.

I've gone back to a system I had years ago, but got talked into changing (by the bank:()..

I have 2 separate accounts ... my boss puts X amounts into each..

1.....Bills account...I worked out my bills on a yearly basis, then worked out what amount I need to put in each week to cover those bills, plus a bit extra for personal items....this way I always have money for a bill..

2.....Savings account......this money (even if small amount wkly) soon adds up when not touched....

By having them separate, its easy to see straight away what you have for each purpose....when my monies were all in the one account, I found it easy to lose track of what actual savings I had..

My husband thinks its a silly idea, but it works beautifully for me....I won't make the mistake of listening to so called financial experts again..

I do my banking to suit me, not what the bank thinks I should do..

Lol, ok...

So far I have 2 i think. I have one extra in my wallet, but that is going to have to go to my flatmate for the phone bill!!! (my share is $15).

Another thing I'm going to try and do is get rid of my change.. i have so much coinage in my gfc money box.. every note i break, I could be paying with that instead. And stuff going to a bank to get it changed into notes, cause they charge you for that..

And also if you have quite a bit of spare cash (and not confident enough to invest in shares- much to the disappointment of my bf, lol), I'd get a term deposit. Finally after all these years I've done it.. much better interest rate than a regular bank account.

Give the flatmate a $20 and you get another $5 note to save.
That's how this thing works.
$5 notes just do not exist:)

Then you either use coins or tell him you only have a twenty. You do not use a $5 note for ANYTHING!

I think I have about $30!!! And... its just been about a week or so. :thumbsu:

My 30th birthday is coming up in a couple months, so I'm going to put all this money towards my party.

Another one is not to have a credit card..

I'd have to disagree. CC are pretty handy (esp when OS).. the trick is to maybe leave them at home when you go shopping, lol. Also NEVER to increase the limit. Ie. mine is $3000 and it is staying that way!!

You just have to know how to handle them. Man ive seen ridiculous people on Oprah putting stuff like CARS on credit!!!! FFS!!! Then they end up paying credit card debt with... CREDIT CARDS. ****ing morons.. I pay my whole CC bill in full from month to month..

Can you not just put aside $20-$30 a week in your bank account? Sounds much easier...

I'm doing this in addition to putting money into my award saver every month. What i usually spend $5 on is takeaway junk.. crap like that. Hopefully this will make me cut back..

I'm a he... ever thought about expanding your business?

Um....

I do the same but with $1 and $2 coins, been doing this for just over a year and have a touch over $1300 saved up.

I try to do it with coins mainly 20 cents and lower. For me they mount up. I have filled one money tin with about $50 worth of coins, and have a bigger tin about 2/3rds full.

What I try to do as well is to always have a minimum amount in the bank account before each and every pay day, so I know what I can and cannot spend. I do have a decent fund built up in the 4 figure bracket, although it would be nice if the 2nd account I had when I was a teenager was still able to be accessed.
