I clicked on this thread expecting an autopsy on the 3 win minnows.

I think I just realised though that Essendon still couldn't beat Brisbane.

In saying that, they beat them to what matters most.....Pick 1

Believe it or not I thought they were a chance to beat us (Freo) the way we were tracking. Can't really tease the Dons too much after the year we've just had.
Joe Daniher is turning into something quite special I think. It's not that I ever thought he wouldn't over time, just his kicking was a problem.

I'd be interested to hear from Dons supporters what has been going on with Daniher.

I was one of the people who thought we'd go winless and have people searching the record books every few weeks. Remember we were bottom 4 and on the receiving end of 100+ point losses the year before even with a full list. The fact we didn't do nearly as well as we could've with our top selections only reinforced my initial view. So 3 wins and 2-3 other matches where we had a lead in the last quarter massively exceeded expectations.

I'm more positive about our future prospects than after last season, but I think some of our fans are getting carried away thinking we'll launch straight into the 8 next year. There were clubs with outs almost comparable to ours at different points of the season who were still performing levels above us. Still plenty of work to be done.

Probably what I expected when it comes down to wins.

But they generally have been a lot more competitive then I tought. Expected quite few 100+ beating.

I thought I remembered a thread here pre-season but can't seem to find it - feel free to merge if so

It's over, Essendon won three games.

Was that what you thought?

I remember some people actually suggested it'd be 5+.

Others were absolutely adamant Essendon wouldn't even get close to one win.

Where did you stand? What do you think of it now?

Personally I had us down for 1 - 2 wins, so it went a bit better than I thought. I did think they'd come later in the year against teams out of the finals race, so the Melbourne game really surprised me.

Any observations? Has it changed your perception of the strength / quality of the AFL competition? If nothing else it's an interesting experiment in that sense.

I voted for 5. There were a couple of close losses in there, so I don't feel too bad for that estimate.
Of course, major lol at brisbane, also with 3 wins, but no good players to come back in...
