DOCKERS
1. Don't play our best backman forward. AT ALL.

2. Play Campbell and Collard.

3. Hawthorn will undoubtably employ a midfield flood against us. IE a zone around the ball carrier. They will make it difficult to switch sides, and play a spare man a kick behind play. To beat this tactic we will need our longest kickers in the team. Position them across HB and tell our midfield to lead to the opposing HFF flank. When doing this our fowards should know not to lead into the space we are trying to create.

4. Play our fowards deep and rely upon our midfielders to run the ball towards the 50. Especially if Tarrant/Pavich are being double or tripled team. They should stand in the goal square limiting the impact of the spare man and giving our midfielders room to run into.

In: Collard, Thorton or Hadrill (both were listed in the best for their clubs), Cambell
Out: M Carr, Solomen, Parker
If grover get suspended then Hadrill and Thorton into the side

Midfield too slow.

In: Drum, Campbell, Collard, Browne
Out: Cook, Parker, M Carr, McManus
The bold 2 aren't ready to go just yet, Drummie's form has been reasonably ordinary and the other two would be a hard case to convince CC, i wish i could sit in on match committee meetings, imagine being a fly on the wall

Form doesnt come into it now. We are too slow in the midfield. Drum must play and if browne is over his injury must play. CC promised changes to personnel, if he doesnt include pace will we gets smashed by Hawthorn

Tip for the coaches :
You should have traded/drafted for midfielders at the end of 2006.
:(

Fast midfielders. We have got plenty of slow midfielders with "big bodies" as that fool Broadbridge would say.

Surely we can recruit one of the mercenaries from a Victorian club next season.

When's the last time someone went from playing another position to being a dominant midfielder? Kerr, West, Judd, Voss, Buckley, Black, Ricciuto, DalSanto were always midfielders, there isn't a magic potion that turns flankers into ball winning mids.

Pav, Goodes and Kouta have done it, but they were already among the best players in the comp when they moved into the midfield.

Johnson, Drum, Hayden, Mundy, etc etc etc will never be top quality midfielders. Drum was crap as a midfielder in the TAC Cup, if he couldn't play there with his class against boys he's not going to be able to do it 2 years later against men.

I am not entirely disagreeing with you but I believe that these players started their football careers as such:

(1) Buckley - HBF,
(2) Hird - HFF,
(3) Burton - CHF/FF,
(4) Shaun Burgoyne - FP,
(5) Luke Power - FP,
(6) Bell - FP
(7) Brent Harvey - FP
(8) Dal Santo - HBF
(5) Bruce - CHF

I watched Drum on the weekend in the middle. You are right in that he will never be an in-and-under midfielder, but I have changed my mind in so much that I am convinced he could play the role that Pavlich used to play for us in the middle (IE. Big fast skillful ball carrier, decent tackler).

But I agree - we also need to go after a REAL midfielder who both gets the ball, has the agility to get out of traffic and has reasonable skills to get it to our forwards (Come on down Chris Masten)....

spot on slacker

our trading & drafting has been dreadful since 1994. occasionally we get it right but when a team is down for so long they do get first bite at the cherry.
Cameron Schwab has had a big influence on a lot of the trading decisions/blunders & should go before CC does.

ok kiddies, fire away, tell me I'm not a true supporter blah blah

we need a decent clearance player. Haselby is good but he can't be the only one.

and McPharlin forward cause more pain then pleasure.

Give all the guys a free license to play to their own style and instinct... physically, mentally etc.... let them read the play, and to play the game the way their talent is naturally. :thumbsu:

I have a suspicion that Mathews somehow kept Johhno away from the ball. He must have worked out MJ was cutting them up with his clearing kicks..
I know it's a well used tactic to keep the attacking backline players out of the action by getting their opponent to take them away from the play.
With only the box to watch it is hard to see if it happened.

So my tip for the coaching staff.
Don't let Johhno be taken away from the ball.

Would it be a decent call for Phil Smart to be replaced??

Yet a midfielder can go and play in another position???

Just for argument sake Hayden played as a midfielder his whole life before going to Freo, constantly plays in the middle when at South Freo as well...did you think they gave him a spot on the list because they knew he could play in a position that he never played in before???

Sure, most classy midfielders can play on a flank. Most defenders can play forward, but playing in the centre square takes different skills to playing forward or back.

Hayden was recruited as a forward/midfielder, but if the club were confident that he could play onball we probably would have seen him in there by now since we have struggled out of the centre since prior to Hayden's debut. I've never seen Hayden in the centre square for South's, but I don't see the bulldogs play that often.

Now that you have said he was recruited as a midfielder are you going to tell me he has lost what he got drafted for in the first place???

I dont think its his fault the coaches want to play favourites.

Watch any of the games he has played in the last year for South and you will see. Then go back to before he was drafted at South and you could even look at the year he played in the Colts GF for East Freo. One thing in common, he played as a midfielder.

I don't keep South Fremantle games on tape, so I'll take your word for it. I hope you are right, but we probably won't see him on the ball any time soon.
