Watching volleyball this Olympics has made me wonder a bit why Australia are so poor at it. There are over 200K registered players and it's very well-participated in school and club. Obviously it's a popular port globally hence a lot of competition, but I would've thought we'd be better than where we ranked given the likes of Cameroon, Tunisia and, even, Qatar are ranked higher in the men's and ranked 40th in the women.
If its anything like Qatari handball, their volleyball team is probably full of naturalised athletes who are making bank because of it

Volleyball is i guess my sport, have played and coached it for 30+ years, both kids play for the state so I am a bit biased, but some of the rallies and amazing ball recoveries etc make it such a great sport to watch.
It's a great sport to play. I only played it by chance when our high school didn't have enough kids to field a footy team for the annual country week sport championships so the footy players formed a volleyball team (so we could go away and have a week off school 🤣). We started off pretty awful but ended up finishing second to a bunch of kids from Christmas Island who had been playing all their life.
So much fun though great sport!

Yeah, I'm not touching this one.

Good luck to her but I suspect no matter your views any medal will be viewed with suspicion by sections of the public.
yeah. as pepsi says, i dont think it is fair for her to be in female competition. nothing personal to her, just it doesn't seem fair.

If/When she wins a medal, I am sure there is going to be a conversation about the fairness of it. this is only just the begining and we are a long way to acceptance, one way or another

Has someone else lost the softball

Wished she wasn’t there was actually good last time when she lost saved the controversy. My view hasn’t changed in the topic that said I get it they can’t win on this.

Our men have been okay, the women are way behind internationally. I could write a LOT on the subject, but some points are, the best female players in more recent times have been directed more to Beach volleyball. More money to be made, more opportunity to play overseas etc.
Volleyball in the US is huge for women at college level. Here less so, outside of our state leagues, and if you happen to be a junior in Queensland, where volleyball Australia basically resides, we don't have great pathways.
Europe pro league is huge also. We have some players playing internationally at smaller clubs, and a few players that get college scholarships, but not enough to make us top tier

Personally I think following international sporting medical guidelines are the best way - not all transgender people are the same - but I understand the consternation at the IOC permitting her to compete since there are legitimate questions as to whether the restrictions are too lax and there is no universal agreement as to where the line should be drawn.

It's a difficult topic which often offends and enrages. Hence, steering clear. I don't think I've said anything disagreeable on the topic.
It really is such an interesting and difficult topic to debate. I don't get angry with the argument for either side. A fair bit of nuance around the issue. Ethically I don't know what the right way to go with it is.
