A golden era dawns in Australian middle distance, with our current crop of talent able to qualify for Tokyo, or hovering around the Olympic qualification standards.

Launceston Running Festival:

On home shores, a handful of Australia’s distance runners took charge of the Launceston Running Festival in Tasmania. Though the Melbourne lockdown forced most Tokyo-bound runners to withdraw, the event still saw big results. Most notably Rio Olympian Milly Clark lit up her hometown to set a new course record with a time of 1:11.09. Although just outside her personal best time, the record was also a Tasmanian all-comer’s record.
Thomas de Canto won the event in 1:02.38, with Riley utensils in second place with a time of 1:02.54. Ben St Lawrence (1:03.09) placed third, while Paralympic hopeful Matthew Felton completed the course in 1:17.34.

The Launceston 10 event saw two Tokyo-bound marathoners in Ellie Pashley (Julian Spence) and Michael Roeger (Philo Saunders) compete in one of their last road events before the big dance. Roeger ran 29.40, while Pashley finished the 10km in 32:31. Both will now prepare for the Gold Coast half marathon.

Meeting International de Nice:

Jeff Riseley (Justin Rinaldi) made his Olympic intentions clear last week with a slick 1:45.34 in the 800m – just shy of the automatic qualifier. This week in Nice he backed up the performance with another brilliant run of 1:45.36. Ranked 87 in the world, Riseley will need to meet the qualifying standard to be eligible for selection and will attempt the standard again next week in Poland.

In the 1500m, 23-year-old Jye Edwards (Dick Telford) placed first with a scorching 3:34.74 run highlighting once again that his breakthrough performance at the Australian Track and Field Championships was no fluke. Rorey Hunter (Dick Telford) finished just over two seconds behind him, crossing the line in 3:36.82 for a fifth place finish, while Ryan Gregson (Nic Bideau) clocked 3:44.72.

The men’s 3000m Steeplechase and 5000m events saw near misses of the Olympic qualifier for Australian athletes. Ben Buckingham (Nic Bideau) produced a result of 8:24.57 to place fourth, with James Nipperess (Dick Telford) finishing in 9th with 8:35.22 and Edward Trippas (Jason Vigilante) clocking 8:40.44.
The Olympic qualifying standard of 13:13.50 was in sight for Morgan McDonald (Joe Bosshard) in Nice, and although he took the win in the event, he missed it by 0.17s. He finished in front of compatriot David McNeill (Nic Bideau) who placed third with a time of 13:14.19.

Sollentuna Grand Prix 2021:

Two Australians lined up at the Sollentuna Grand Prix in an effort to rise up against some of the world’s best or gain the necessary ranking points to keep their Tokyo dreams alive. Following her successful European season opener during the week, high jumper Eleanor Patterson (Alex Stewart) continued her impressive comeback from injury with a second place finish, and a season’s best performance of 1.94m.

While Patterson was unable to clear the 1.96m bar that eventually saw Belarus’ Karyna Demidik win, the meet was only her third of the year, highlighting she has much more to give in the next six weeks ahead of the Olympics.

Controversy at women's 100m in Eugene. Aleia Hobbs was disqualified for a slight movement from semi finals. But appealed and judges said they made a mistake and she runs in lane 9 in the final. She has run a 10.91 this year.

Darrell Streams is run by a 14 or 15 year old kid who likes athletics. In future days check these 2 links to see if he has been allowed to put up a stream for the day.

Edit his twitch page is at the following link, but just join the two bits of URL together as Big Footy automatically puts up the latest video if I post the full URL;

Found this free stream of US Olympic Trials athletics and have been watching for about 20 minute. Just missed the men's 100m semis and have been watching the women's semis. Sha'carri Richardson is a cut everybody else and will start favourite in Tokyo. Ran a 10.64 Oliver won the 2nd semi with a 10.83. Just checked Shelly Anne Fraser-Pryce ran a 10,63 at Jamaican trial 2 weeks ago.

Okagbare ran 10.62 at Nigerian nationals. Some "concern" over wind legality. But 10.62 is 10.62.

After I posted I saw Richardson's 10.63 was with a +2.6m/s wind, but as you say windy or not that is still bloody quick.

Her win in the final was a 10.86 the wind was -1.0m/s but she got a poor start and was 2nd or 3rď at 50m mark, before winning by 0.13 over Oliver who she beat in the 1st SF by 0.19.

The Tokyo Olympic village is really a city within a city. And it has to be, considering the strict Covid rules that prevent athletes from venturing beyond the walls for anything other than training or competition. Keeping those athletes, as well as tens of thousands of journalists, sponsors, officials and millions of Japanese people safe during the event will be one of the greatest challenges major event organisers have ever faced.

Got the stream going just in time for the men’s 100m. Kerley top qualifier from second semi. Lyles grabs that 3rd spot. You can see he’s a 200m specialist, was hitting his straps just as the race finished.

Bromell won his semi in 9.90 and looked a lot more relaxed than Kerley and baker from 2nd semi. He already is favourite for Tokyo and if his wins in 90 minutes or so, his odds will just shorten.

Well done kendra Keni Harrison on winning the 100m Hurdles. She stuffed up Olympic Trials in 2016, missed the Rio games but 10 days or so later went to London Olympic stadium and won in a WR time of 12.20 and had to wait an extra year for redemption.

Bromell had a clear win in 9.80, Baker in 9.85 and 400m specialist Kerley makes the team with a 9.86. Baker and Kerley produce PB's at the right time.

Hope 7 have access to this technology in 5 weeks time but NBC put up this graphic of when the sprinters hit top speed in red below. No surprise Lyles had the red shade closest to the finish line.

Just got hold of a video of 400m for women and Felix qualified in 2nd, but with 120 to go was 5th and 20 to go was 4th. Off to her 5th Olympics. the schedule stuffed her up a bit in the past and she couldn't do the 200m/400m double when she was younger and ranked 1st in both so only has 1 individual gold 2021 when she was 27 and ran PB's. Has 3 silvers in 200/400 and 5 golds in 4x100 and 4x400 relays.

400m men's Norman won by a couple of metres from Ross and Cherry who has the fastest time this year was 3rd

1 Michael Norman 44.07 SB 0.178 reaction time
2 Michael Cherry 44.35 PB 0.188
3 Randolph Ross 44.74 0.184 ... Ross ran a PB and world leading 43.85 10 days ago at NCAA championships.

Unless Wayde Van Niekerk does something special in the next 5 weeks I think the yanks will sweep this event and win 4x400m by 2 seconds

Really great news for those that will be able to attend! Makes a big difference for the athletes as well. A bit of a shame there is a 10,000 limit on the Athletics stadium though.

Is that the old Supercar commentator Leigh Diffey?

Chinese drug cheat Sun Yang has had his doping ban cut from 8 to 4 years by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) so will still miss the Tokyo Olympics next month. He will tho be eligible for the Paris Games in 2024.

Sun stood accused of having vials of his blood smashed with a hammer in a tense standoff with a doping agent in the aftermath of samples being collected during a September 2018 visit to his home.

He and his team claimed the doping agent was not properly accredited and that they did not want them to leave with the samples. Sun also refused to provide a urine sample but has constantly maintained his innocence.

Australia has a rich history of Equestrian success at the Olympics starting with gold in the three-day event in Rome in 1960. Laurie Morgan and Neale Lavis had already won gold and silver respectively in the individual contest and then joined the legendary Bill Roycroft to win the team event. Roycroft actually left his hospital bed to compete after a fall the previous day. Then followed varied success between then and Sydney's own Olympics in 2000 at which our three day eventing team of Andrew Hoy , Phillip Dutton, Stuart Tinney and Matt Ryan (inset) took gold in a thriller from GB while the great Hoy also snagged a silver in the individual event. I was lucky to see this ding dong battle live at the specially built Sydney International Equestrian Centre.
