Toast Tom Atkins - Premiership Player - 100 games

I think the biggest kudos you can pay to Atkins ( and Close, Stengle, SDK, Holmes, Miers et al) is that he / they are the barometer for Geelong now - not the PFD, Stewy types.

If Atkins has a great game and is on, we are a greater chance of winning. If PFD is off but they all still fire, we are the goods.

If PFD fires and Atkins and Co dont, IMO we are in more trouble.

Not say PFD and Stewy dont count - but the gap has closed and the faces on the barometer has changed.

A touch quieter this week than in others of 2025 (still a dozen tackles!) but I had my eyes opened by one of his chasing efforts; repeated sprinting efforts to cover a couple of dangerous Dogs. Maybe he is fitter.

Good, worthy bump.

To add to this, I'd say Atkins has developed functional decision making and skills. Not elite, but there's been a progression in that area over recent seasons. He knows how to play the percentages, even with tap ons or when to wear a tackle or dish off etc. Of our midfielders he is probably the one who blindly dump kicks or makes a silly mistake the least often.

The intangibles he adds are those desperate efforts and manic attack of the ball or opposition - Selwood style - when we need a spark. He's sensed the moment pretty well in that regard this season especially.
