Maybe (I haven't seen it), but I reckon that it's getting to the stage that you can't be dominant inside forward 50 without having ground skills that are sublime for players of all size. He's not going to dominate at ground level. He doesn't look built to cover the Kms of Riewoldt. I just don't think you can dominate inside 50 anymore with a game based around leading and contested marking. It's too hard with all the zoning restricting space. Whilst I think he'll be a solid player, I just don't see how he'll dominate.
Riewoldt is one of a kind, name me one other forward with his running power. Last week was a quagmire of a game for sandy, but the week before he played CHF for sandy, 13 marks (plenty of contested as well as hit ups), 21 touches, 2 goals (both from roving snaps). The amount of times he picked it up on the bounce. He's going to be a very good player. He's an old school footballer in the ways it matters the most, he can read the play, crash a pack and use his body, and he picks it up very cleanly off the deck.

He wasn't a number one pick for nothing, just watch the highlights http://www.saints.com.au/video/2016-05-10/mccartin-vfl-round-5

Also a number of his touches that he got from ground/bouncing balls weren't included in that highlights reel.

His set shots need work, as does his tank, but he can definitely play, and definitely improve in those areas.

For 7.5m sure

The doggies will be happy to cover part of it. Say $500kpa?

But seriously, if I had a choice between Boyd and McCartin I'd take Boyd everyday of the week. I was very impressed watching him spend some time in the ruck.

The dogs set the bar high on salaries which is a pain, but I understand they needed to do something to make a statement for their fans.

But he will turn out to be a very good player. Maybe not $1m pa worth, but not far off it ($700k to $800k maybe).

But his salary isn't an issue unless it means they can't retain their other young stars. At this stage it hasn't been an issue. I'm sure the doggies will plan things out for the future.

you would think a mod supporting a club who has libba on their list would show a bit more empathy in regards to recreational drug use, especially with the reports shortly after that saga
Of the hundreds of AFL players who get on the gear only one of them was dumb enough to film it and send it around. Hope Jake is keeping his nose clean in his 12 months off, I'm sure hanging about with Will Sparks and the Orval's will help him do so.

This thread is gold.

I certainly think he'll be a bust. But I certainly don't mind the deal. We did something bold at a dire time and it gave all of us fans hope (which we didn't have much of at the time).

Hoping he becomes a solid player who kicks many goals for us for years to come.

Don't get me wrong. I think he'll be a good player. I just don't think he'll live up to the number one billing. I just wouldn't use a number one draft choice on a pure forward, unless he projects as having a Buddy-like freakish all round game and I don't think that's Boyd, Patton, McCartin. To me, the game's changed so much, that mark and kick stars from yesteryear, such as Sticks and Matty Lloyd would no longer be able to dominate.

Out of all the number 1 picks though how many have turned out to be legitimate superstars?

Riewoldt
Hodge
Goddard
with a rising Weitering a possible

so not much difference between pick 1, 2 and 3 these days pretty much. Could have got Petracca sure, but then again the Dogs could have gotten Ollie Wines rather then Jackson Macrae in 2011 but not sure they are banging their heads against the wall about that either. Paddy will do ok, but when you come into a club and are being measured up againt and all time great in Nick Riewoldt it is hard for anyone to look good I dare say. Though I sure like the thought of him learning from Roo, it will only do him well in the future and if he can get his tank even half the size of Nicks then he will be a scary prospect in future :)

Agree - the fantasy surrounding pick one is amazing. McCartin is unlikely to be as good as Petracca IMO, but Petracca hasn't done as much as Brayshaw etc. I'm actually a big fan of McCartin, I like what he does, but he needs to get his body under control, and I'm sure that will happen.

I'm a massive Boyd fan, I'm convinced the kid is going to be just what we need (we've never had anyone who can stand under a high ball under pressure), but if I ever thought he's going to repay the contract, I'd be stupid.

The reason I get frustrated with threads like this is because the money is frankly irrelevant, someone has to get it, and I know it's not going to prevent us signing anyone else or retaining our other young talent so I'm glad we got him. What he represents for the club is worth more than what his salary is, which is a big f uck you to GWS. He represented a turning point in the club.

Sorry not sure what him being banned for a year has to do with the cocaine video?
And actually we aren't paying his salary this year, it's quite common knowledge...not that I'd expect you to know that.

Cant read?

quite obvious that St Kilda has been effected paying part of a player's salary who was banned from the sport for a year, who was shown on video snorting cocaine (then admitted it). However I would not expect St Kilda fans to be impartial to that.

Good points. Poor poor form from a mod Mike__ suriy u need to respond or just take a look at your own clubs problems firstly. I don't think you would catch saints fans saying things about libbas drug problems but for a mod to do it about carsile is a bit rich

for the record, yes Liberatore was dealt with and has a strike against his name. I find it quite cute that its ok for some to make comments about players from other clubs yet they get upset when someone fires back,

Perhaps you might try taking things a little more lighthearted without getting so wound up over what gets typed on BigFooty. It might save you the headache or two.

It'll cost you a million a year, your first round pick and Scott Pendlebury....but he'll 'come good'.

but, he's no Jack Billings....
