I don't think they'll lose any players but where it will hurt is trying to attract experienced players when they're in full premiership mode. His salary is basically worth two very good players that they could bring in to play a specific role.

No doubt at some point it will have some sort of impact. If he doesn't become a regular then a million dollars a year to Boyd is like operating at 90% of the salary cap. They will have to manage that because as they become more successful their players become more valuable - Bont, Libba, Stringer, Wallis, Wood etc are all worth far more today on the open market than they were even a year ago.

The trick will be to get a Geelong type culture into the group that makes players stay for success not for money. That is probably the real danger for the Dogs. If they are just top 4 - not serious contenders then it becomes harder to sell "premiership" to the players. Will be interesting to watch how it unfolds next 2 or 3 years. Of course Boyd could still turn out to be a superstar.

So I suppose it's a good thing that the open market hasn't even had a sniff of these players, with all of them re-signing even when they didn't come out of contract into the following year.

I'd say it's the next contract onwards for those young guys that might cause problems. Going to need a lot of back-ending for anyone that needs a big payrise on their next deal before the end of 2021 (end of Boyd's current contract), which could cause flow on issues for the next age group onwards, etc.

I'm not sure why you think that the reasons for leaving are in any way relevant to how the club acted at the trade table. Both clubs were forced to trade players whom they didn't want to trade. Both players were under contract. Both were regarded as premier midfielders, both requested a trade to a single club only. One club salvaged at first, second, and steak knives, the other gave away pick 6 along with their player, for a second year player on a $1m contract whilst also paying their traded players salary.

The players reasons for leaving are completely irrelevant.

It's also irrelevant because the Pies have "won" a bunch of trades in the past few years and keep sliding down the ladder. Dogs "lose" trades and go up the ladder.....

What an irrelevant post.

Everyone important signed to long term contracts, picked up an experienced, important cog in Suckling and according to posters in the know are right into Hurley (whether we get him or not is irrelevant, the fact we're 100% into him means weve got the cash).

All while sitting equal second on the ladder while enduring a heap of injuries. Frankly I'm not overly concerned with our position.

So it's actually irrelevant to my comment

Good to know

So when an already finals-quality side adds an experienced free agent that isn't relevant?

I'm not sure you even know what point you are making

If this kid has any ticker all this hate and BS is going to make him a superstar, he needs a coach who believes in him and lets him go out and do his own thing every week and makes his teammates protect and encourage him. Then his talent will shine

I don't think it is these players you worry about. It is your top 22 bottom 6 - 8. Clubs will always find money for their top 10, it is how good your bottom 8 are as Saints found out to their detriment. It is the salaries of your A graders that squeeze out your B graders.

This is a really good point. It's something I have wondered. You would have thought 600-700k and he would have jumped at it.

If I recall correctly Carlton had a war chest locked and loaded to chase Boyd when he came out of contract, I also recall the Saints try to muscle in on the action when it came out he wanted to come to the Dogs. Who knows they might have been responsible for driving up the price, we will never know.

On behalf of my club we thank ye for outbidding us :D not that the next big money buy we did secure has been any better so far  And I know one team which hope he never is again :p

Who says we aren't in premiership mode now?

We are equal second, despite one of the worst seasons in the league injury-wise. We signed a Free Agent (Suckling) with this in mind and are chasing another big fish in this trade period.

Just because we are a young and inexperienced side mostly it doesn't stop us from contending.

So when a club gets knocked out in the first week of the finals it's now considered to be a premiership contender in that year?
