Completely wrong back then mate

Wasn't aware at that stage how bad the breakdown between us and Griff was.

And that's proven by the deal we signed which is nowhere near that offer.

No offence but it was pretty widely reported GWS offered a top 10 pick for Griffen IIRC.

Again IIRC GWS didn't want to release Boyd and Boyd said he'd stay if no deal struck. As you say Griffen wasn't coming back. Again as you say that difference in leverage meant we got bent over in the Boyd deal.

All in all, I'm still comfortable with it. Boyd showed enough last week to keep me quietly confident he will be a key part of tilt at a flag in the future.

As Boyd said when he was drafted, he's a Tippett/Hawkins type. As we know those guys at 20 weren't special. Like Boyd.

Sure we've overpaid on current form. But it's premature hyperbole to say Boyd will be shit or it will cost us other players or a flag.

And really Griffen is cooked so Boyd only cost us P6 in real terms plus salary we would just have had to pay to retain some other cooked or injury prone player like a Higgins or a Cooney.

It really is too early to say.

And honestly, most Dog fans who watched our Pygmy fwd line fail in finals for years accept that we had to do something to ensure that history wouldn't repeat.

I don't think you get it. Regardless of Griffs threats, GWS and the Bulldogs would have worked out a fair trade. It's that simple.

I don't think you get it yeah they would have but it wouldn't have been much.

Gws cracked it with us coz we were talking to Boyd.

They weren't happy they weren't going to fold for us mate.

I don't argue Griff was worth any value but they had us and we pissed them off.

I love what the Doggies have done over the past couple of years and would really love to see them succeed but they've clearly done their balls on Boyd.
Surely sinking that much money into a bloke who has hardly touched it for 2 years means they are no chance at luring Hurley unless he just WANTS to play there.
Anyone on significant coin not likely to go around next year?

They did make an initial offer of a lower pick and a player BUT then Boyd got involved and the Giants found out we were talking to him behind their backs and they pulled the offer.

It's amusing they did that coz Leon "peaheart" Cameron had been into Griffen all year.

It's easy to cherry pick the result but you have to see the path it took to get there.

Griff leaves

GWS make offer

Boyd get involved

GWS pull offer and say Boyd ain't leaving under any circumstances.

Griff let's club know he will sit out if trade isn't made.

We put all our cards into Boyd we had to make the deal even though it hurt us.

Pretty simple if you look at the entire situation

Have nearly a million to spend we will be ok I'm guessing

So you're saying that GWS cracked it because you wanted Boyd.

So if you hadn't asked for Boyd and traded for a pick like I suggested, GWS wouldn't have been pissed off, and subsequently tried to bend you over?

You're all over the place here, and another one of your supporters has already put you in your place regarding what GWS was prepared to offer for Griffen. Please just stop now, this is getting embarrassing.

Yeah you may be right there. IIRC GWS were shitting themselves that the exodus floodgates would open and needed to make a statement.

We also needed to make a statement that after being pillaged by the expansion teams throughout history - that enough was enough.

Regardless of how the Boyd deal turns out the deal was a positive turning point for our club.

Minson is on a fair bit, signed his contact during his AA season.

Haha hasn't at all.

look at the time line it makes perfect sense to anyone with a brain.

It all changed when GWS found out we were not only talking to Boyd but had been for 6 months. They even come out in a press conference and said this.

The offers then changed dramatically and GWS played hardball and we folded like a deck chair.

There have been plenty of #1 picks who took several seasons to get going. Goddard, Gibbs, Murphy, hell even Hodge was labeled a fail pick in his early years

Gibbs and Murphy were guns straight off the bat, so were Hodge. Hodge was AA and B&F at 21. Gibbs 16 brownlow votes top ten in comp for disposals in 3rd season. Riewoldt best and fairest at 20, AFL MVP at 22.

Gibbs was a gun straight off the bat? He was decent but hardly a gun.

Apologies, didn't realise you had a copy of the books

We are not paying the full cap and everyone is contracted until the end of 2018 we really care about

Mino and Griffens wage will be gone next year which is about 700-800 collectively.

So with the raise in salary cap also its logical we have a least a million is it not?

Mate we are speculating. Minson re-signed on the back of an AA season. What price an AA ruck? Minson will likely finish this year, could be $500k frees up there alone, meaning we only have to find $300k for Hurley.

Drop in the ocean.

Fair call.
I know where a wasted million is going per season.

You were arguing with me that Griffen wouldn't have gotten you a top 10 pick regardless though!
My initial statement was that you could have recieved a high pick for Griffen, then taken Wright and Lever if you hadn't pursued Boyd. Your response has gone from 'Griff had us by the balls, we couldn't have gotten anything for him' to 'yeah GWS offered a top 10 pick and a player, but then got pissed off because we went after Boyd'.
You've just proven my argument right, because my scenario specifically didn't involve chasing Boyd and taking a deal for Griffen alone, yet you're still trying to tell me I'm wrong! Just give up already, your contradictions are getting ridiculous!

Fair call.

We won't know that until we know how Boyd turns out. And we don't that yet.

Could be a waste or could be extremely clever front loading of a seven year deal.

Clap clap I have not heard that before.

How did the 800k a year that you paid Clarke work out for you ? At least Boyd hasn't said I don't care how much I'm getting paid this joint is a rabble I want out.

We can all play this game

Melbourne was paying Clarke $600k per year not $800k.

At the end of the day if you're a football club in this country, chucking $7 million at a young unproven kid who hasn't done much is a bad deal. But after reading some Doggies supporters posts in this thread, I can understand it.

If you're a club who hasn't won a premiership in 60 years, and only one in your entire existence, surely the value of a premiership just goes out the window. Imagine if the Dogs passed on Boyd, and he turned out to be an absolute gun and they a lost a grand final this era to GWS (likely to play off vs them in many finals) and the difference was that GWS had gun key forwards but the Dogs didn't. They would be absolutely kicking themselves. For a club that hasn't won in 60 years, it's actually a very bold move, even if he doesn't come good, they won't be left thinking "what if" like a hell of a lot of other clubs could be.

There is no price on a premiership. AFL clubs are NON-PROFIT. They aren't here to make money. They are here to use the money they make to win the ultimate prize. Hell, one of my biggest fears is not being able to see another Essendon premiership in my lifetime and I've seen one already.

But yeah other than that Boyd is not playing good football anyway you want to spin it, but then again Quinten Lynch became a 60 goal forward with the likes of Kerr Cousins Judd feeding him, Doggies have the right midfield to turn him into a gun.

Also I can't believe I've read every post in this thread.

Oh god really??

You can't dismiss Boyd he got involved so your talking out your a$$. We couldn't make a single deal for Griff once Boyd got involved or we would have!!!!!

Hindsight is brilliant but Boyd got involved even if you want to pretend he didn't so move on your talking gibberish now.

It's a pretty simple timeline read it and try and process it.

End discussion have a great day
