Most of his contract is paid now.

Bottom clubs sit in their hands and play the victim, complaining about everyone wanting to go to Hawthorn, Sydney and Geelong.

When a club goes out and takes a risk and uses their cap space, that they have to pay 95% of anyway, to bring in talent. People can't wait to potshot them.

Meanwhile the Dogs are in a gf while the rest sit and cry about unfair it all is.

Ultimately it may not be as successful as we hoped, but so far all we've had to contend with is all our required players signing new contracts, attracting a free agent from another club and making the GF for the first time in 50-odd years. Been a disaster from start to finish....

Bulldogs were always damned if we do and damned if we don't here. We chase Boyd and pay big and we're seen as idiots who are going to price themselves out of the race of any free agents while if we don't then we're going to just keep on getting linked to every shit tall like Vickery and Butcher.

I haven't gone through the whole thread, but has anyone picked up on the hypocrisy of Barrett continually questioning Boyd's huge contract, yet just on Monday said that Buddy's enormous contract at Sydney will be justified with just one flag and that the merchandise etc didn't matter. It stuck out like a sore thumb to me.

I'm surprised that more people aren't worried about what'll happen when we get rid of the $1m spud from our list, and bring Murphy, Crameri, Adams, Wallis and Redpath back in.

Already making GF's despite these significant disadvantages and with the added burden of Tom Boyd.....

What'll happen next year.... :rolleyes::p:D

Maybe the umpires will take off their Bulldogs scarves next year, that might bring you back to the pack a bit.

One big difference, Buddy was already a superstar when the Swans signed him on a huge contract and so far his performances have been a lot closer to what you would expect from a million dollar a year player than Boyd's performances

Can't believe this thread is at almost 3000 posts.

If the Dogs win on Saturday I request the mods change the title to 'Tom Boyd - Premiership Player and BigFooty can kiss his glorious golden ass'

Yes, but teams have to pay 95% of the cap, so you can overpay all your players to meet that or overpay one or two great talents from other clubs that may come off.

People are paid based on potential across all industries.

Lol @ the haters. Obviously doing a good job to stay in 22 for the grand final.

BF posters logic over the actual coaches that got them to the GF. If you were all so smart why don't you start talking to the dogs about a coach career
Being a dogs supporters i would think you would know theres a fair chance if crameri redpath and even cambbell were fit and available then boyd would be playing in the twos . Injuries saved him . Makes one wonder why you would consider cloke if wonderboy was the man up forward short and long term ? .

They are going to lose players like Jong along the way now. Regardless of how well there drafting has gone (which has been by far the best in the comp) the boyd trade is a spectacular fail so far when you consider the other players they could have thrown a million a year at.

We've only offered Jong two years while he wants three years. That's all it is with Jong, this is like Geelong losing Prismall because of guys like Bartel & Ablett i.e nothing to do with high paid talent.

A couple of things: 1) Buddy was the best key position player in the league & 2) Buddy is still the best key position player in the league.

Knowing that many still questioned the wisdom of the contract Sydney offered him (& some still do).

Boyd on the other hand was signed purely on potential. Based on the public comments of their president it's fair to question who exactly made that decision too. Not sure Tom's selling much merchandise or memberships at this point either.

So until Boyd performs up to that potential & to what his contract says his performances should be, people will question that decision. Precious Doggies fans might not like that but in sport, it's what we do.

Much like people will question draft decisions when a player like Bont is overlooked ahead of others.

Its what "we" & people like Barrett will do.

There's no need to be precious or self righteous about it. Especially not on a forum discussing football.

Not really, being a dogs supporter I would recognise that;
  • Boyd was favoured to Redpath pre shoulder injury (and then suspension)
  • Campbell is seen as a depth ruckman and I am surprised he has signed on again rather than look for somewhere try and become a #1 ruck
  • Crameri isn't a KPF and is a 3rd tall who uses his great aerobic capacity to work between the arcs and burn his opponent running back towards goal on a fast transition.
  • One of our glaring weaknesses is our possession chains breaking down around the CHF area and we have literally not one tall forward as depth next year (we've been playing Zaine Cordy as our CHF, a guy who had never played forward in his life). So bringing in Cloke who is willing to take a huge paycut to try and kickstart his career, and who has strengths which match our needs, is a no brainer. He's not dislodging Boyd as our Ruck/KPF.

All good points but i reiterate with redpath who before his knee was travelling real good and no way boyd pushes redpath back out on the form he was producing. And cloke and crameri in the side their is no spot for boyd in the forwardline other than because of his contract worth . He battled manfully last week against sydney but is completely out of his depth in the ruck especially at centre bounces . Man up chief if he didnt have a huge contract hed be battling away in the twos .

Real good is an overstatement. If you look simply at goals kicked he averaged 2 a game which is quite decent, yes. BUT, he was a liability for our game plan as a whole. Beverage prefers to use Roughead only around 50-60% of the time in the ruck and then use his versatility to drop back and provide a bailout kick target, so we need our tall forward to play big ruck minutes. Redpath when playing this hybrid role only averaged 10 possessions a game and had no impact as a ruckman at all. So it's one of those things where he was a half decent forward but couldn't play that second role in perhaps the most versatile team in the competition, which has used this strategy as a key part of making the grand final.

If you look at Boyd he isn't currently as good a forward as Redpath, but is much better at the hybrid role we play. He is normally okay for 10 hitouts, a few clearances, 15 disposals, a few tackles and has remarkably good skills for a big bloke. So Beverage basically sacrifices that goal a game for the extra fluidity Boyd brings to our game.

And cloke and crameri in the side their is no spot for boyd in the forwardline other than because of his contract worth.

Not true. If you look at our current team then Cloke is basically a direct replacement for Zaine Cordy. Crameri played large midfield minutes last year for us and I expect that to continue too. Same role stringer was gradually moving towards before his AC injury.

He battled manfully last week against sydney but is completely out of his depth in the ruck especially at centre bounces .

You mean GWS? Mumford for the majority of the game rucking solo is obviously a daunting task, but he actually either beat him or drew level for hitouts to advantage, had more clearances, and limited Mumfords usual influence.

Man up chief if he didnt have a huge contract hed be battling away in the twos .
He's literally been in our senior team every week that he has been available for selection this year (only out when he injured his shoulder and then the club suspension). Then Redpath did his knee, Minson has been pensioned off, our rookie ruck Goetz has moved on already, Crameri (who you seem to think is a KFP) is suspended, and you think he would be in the twos?

Not withstanding the fact that you are basically claiming that we, as a grand final team, who has just dropped our new free agent and also has one of our highest paid players spend the entire year in the VFL, would lessen our chances of winning our first premiership in 60 years because of a fear of potential backlash for dropping Tom Boyd? Okay chief....

Think some of the criticism / vitriol directed at Boyd is over the top.

It seemed logical it'd take him a while to come on given that a fair bit of his dominance at junior level was based purely on physical / athletic superiority.

That was never going to just magically translate to the seniors, so he's been gradually adding strings to his bow and making a solid contribution.

His overhead / contested marking is hard to gauge given that he has had issues with the shoulder, but he should be able to and will need to improve there.

In terms of his character, Mitch Wallis and others have spoken very highly of him and you'd think that they are better placed to judge that than we are.

Life gave the Dogs lemons with the Griffen scenario, but they didn't cry woe is me or adopt the foetal position, they went out and made lemonade.

Good luck to them, as far as I'm concerned. :thumbsu:

Yep thats exactly what im saying your not playing him in the twos on that money . He had some issues obviously so he was made to play reserves no way that continues irrelevant of form . Campbell -roughead is a far better combo than boyd- roughead in the ruck as for redpath hes not a ruckman . I find it funny how defensive your people are of boyd with a complete over rating of his performances but are happy to write off redpath who this year atleast before injury was a far better forward than boyd to say otherwise is laughable . Hence why i say injuries and suspension o redpath campbell crameri has saved boyd . Anyways doesnt really matter your in a granny i wish your club all the best . Youve done an amazing job to get to the granny considering the amount of injuries youve had and will be kicking about at the business end of the season for a few years id expect .
Go Doggies !!!

Yep, was going to say that they've not looked back as a club since they were bold and turned the Griffen departure into a positive.

If they win on Saturday, people are going to just look a bit petty trying to maintain the deal was a failure. You think WB fans will give a **** then??

And one might add that in the 7 games the bulldogs have competed in since he kicked 3 against geelong in rd 19 . Boyd has managed to kick 1 goal total in that period . While he has had periods in the ruck where he has looked out of his depth its certainly not the return you would hope for . Even from a developing young forward on the minimum wage let alone the bucks he is on .

Just loving the jealousy of the dogs

It was a massively bold move to take such a punt and I have nothing but admiration for their aggressive strategy.

I read somewhere they are in the grand final this weekend. What a great result and a reward for rolling the dice.

I've also heard Boyd is developing nicely.
