The whole point of free agency is so that the player can look out for their interests.

And really, given an AFL club will chew your body up and then fire you to hobble out the door like you're twenty years older without blinking the player owes no loyalty to the club.
I agree players must look after themselves, and I am not sure if Carlton are a player welfare centred club or not. Not sniping, just don't know.

My feeling is there are moments to jump and moments to stay, and I feel like staying might hurt TDKs pocket, but help his career.

If TDK stays and cements himself as a legend of Carlton, his pockets will be fine long term.

Win a premiership and be a long term player at a big club like Carlton, then yeah will do very nicely for a long time. But its a lot of money to turn down if the success doesnt come at Carlton. Can understand why its a tough choice for some

Pittonet and Cripps were the best clearance team in the league for a while back there.

Personally, I want to see Carlton match the FA offer and he agrees and signs it.
Blues aren't matching $1.7m over 7 years. If he wants the money, good luck to him. He has every right to take the best deal for himself, whether that's money, opportunity to be #1 ruck, chance to play regular finals, or to be closer to family. I'd rather not lose him, but I'd also rather not tie up that much money on a ruck.
If he wants to stay (I think he will), it will be for much less than $1.7m. Anything more than $800k-$1m per is bad business IMO.

When it comes time, Carlton will table their best offer and make him aware that they won't be matching obscene offers. The ball will then be in his court.

Going to be hard to turn down an extra $4 million, I imagine.
Even $800k a year for 7 years can be life changing if you know what you're doing.
You can own a home, have multiple investments properties, share portfolio, set up a business for life after footy and still live a comfortable life.

When you say they won't be matching, is that effectively making him an unrestricted free agent to you? No matching to trade for a better deal?

I literally answered that in my next post down.
Only way I can see us matching is if he says that he's 100% leaving and we want to force a trade.
Can't see us matching in order to keep him. Would be horrible list management at that type of coin.

TDK is my fave player and I rate him so highly but that is crazy, crazy money. If he accepts it, I wouldn't begrudge him at all. It would open up significant cap space for us as well so could be a win.

My gut tells me he will resign at Carlton though. There's been a lot of talk from the senior players around accepting understand and sticking together. I wouldn't criticise a player who left for the money - that is their right - but I wouldn't be comfortable with my club offering that kind of money. That reflects a failed list management and development strategy

I wouldn't expect there to be some unrecoverable falling out between Carlton and De Koning at the end of the season and the friendships he has existing at Carlton would make it just fine for him to remain there.

But if Carlton only matches because they want to extract best value for the player in trade, the player has the right to agree to the terms and sign the deal.

It would be one hell of a circus then.

True but an extra $900k per year on top of that $800k would be close to impossible to turn down.

It seems like you're trying to manufacture a hypothetical to create as much drama as possible.
Yes, if Carlton matched (for whatever reason) Tom would be within his rights to sign and stay...
Boy, what a ruckus!

I'm simply saying that I doubt this scenario comes to fruition, for a multitude of reasons.
1. I doubt we can afford $1.7m x 7
2. I doubt we want to pay him that.
3. I doubt we match an offer like that if it means he accepts, for the reasons above.
4. I doubt we'd accept losing him, if it came to that, for a compo pick that's likely to be between 12-19.
5. I doubt we match unless we know for a FACT that he wants out and will not sign.
6. I doubt he wants to leave, so it's all just fantasy.

This is most likely just SOS trying to drive up his price, ruffle some Carlton feathers and see what else he can shake loose in the process.
Good luck to him, but I doubt it changes our final offer to Tom.
That's a lot of doubts.

Sure. If that's anything like what a genuine offer from the Saints might look like. He'd have a serious decision to make and nobody will blame him for thinking hard about it.
Some people aren't motivated purely by money.
Look at Luka Doncic, who just left around $115m on the table by agreeing to go to the Lakers.

He certainly has a massive decision to make, regardless of the other offers on the table.
We haven't lost a best 22 required player that we wanted to keep yet, so we're obviously doing something right. Might happen eventually, might not.
In the last few years we've lost Kennedy, Stocker, Dow, Setterfield, Jack Martin, Jack Carroll, Fisher and Owies.
Owies and Kennedy are probably the biggest losses in terms of consistent games and output, but most people laughed at us for having them in the best 22, so...

Every single club can currently afford to sign a player to a 7 year, 1.7m a year average deal. Every single one

Pretty sure Luka didn’t get a choice, so it’s not a valid comparison

They would only match under certain circumstances.
1. They know they can afford it and that he wants to stay.
or
2. They know he intends to leave but they want to force a trade.

Yes but if they match and he stays it will definitely cause cap issues.

And if they go down the 2nd route there's always the chance he goes to the draft and puts 1.5mil a year on his head.
