We understand better than you do.

I mean we once had a large amount of cap space too not too many years back.

Then we started throwing out large offers to middle of the road players and next thing you know the cap space was gone and you're still just a mid table team.

You'll have to be using a large chunk of it to resign NAS.

Then you have to start renewing the contracts of players like Caminiti, Sharman, Keeler, Boxshall, Wilson, Windhanger etc

Starts running out quick enough.
It seems impossible for Carlton supporters to process that St Kilda may be executing a plan rather than just bumbling along.

Yes it does. You're spending 1.7 million on a guy you could probably get for less.

If we can only offer just over 1 million why are you offering closer to 2 million?

What is interesting about the TDK contract is what it does when the next lot of genuine guns come out of contract.. If TDK is worth 1.7 then Nick Daicos has to be worth 2.5..
there is no connection between these things.

zac williams being on close to a million a year didnt make the likes of neale, petracca or bontempelli 2 million dollar players.

Correct. Saints need to land a free agent.
Can't land a second or third FA if you don't land the first. We need to make sure of this.
This deal won't set a floor for FA wages. It's a special case.

Irrelevant
Daicos isn't leaving
I am sure he wont leave but loyalty goes both ways, it wont stop his manager and his Dad ensuring he gets the $ that he deserves, IMO he should be the highest paid player in the game and then the flow on impact that his contract has on the Collingwood salary cap.

TDK won't have other FA clamouring to join you.

All his contract will do it make other FA want well overs to come and join.

On the open market he could get offers that wouldn’t be far off that.

Guys like Bont, Darcy etc would have 2’s at the start of their yearly contracts on the open market from now on.

Because as The Gun pointed out above, we have a huge mountain of cap space that we’ve banked, that we either have to spend, or we lose it (the equivalent of a “free hit” in cricket) and most guys who are good enough that they’re going to be getting millions from their own club don’t want to leave, unless for exceptional personal circumstances, and it’s extremely unlikely that any are going to specifically need to come to us (as opposed to any of the other Melbourne clubs) for specific reasons, so that’s why have to offer a contract that is too good to refuse.

Contracts are getting so big now that blokes are going to be very rich without needing to move clubs, and most are very happy where they are, so you may have to offer crazy overs to get someone to leave where they’re happy.

Especially if you’re a club in the bottom half of the ladder.

"probably". Just guess work really.

He's not worth being the highest player in the AFL.
Correct, but nor is Mac Andrew, and it was reported that he signed the “biggest contract of all time” when he re-signed recently, and I imagine most have forgotten that by now, and it won’t be long before TDK’s isn’t the biggest one either.

When you already have a decent enough ruck someone like Butters is who I'd be throwing the big money at.
We presumably are or have.

That still makes awful business sense.

Are you saying you can't get the deal over the line for 1.5 million a season?

There's many more options available to use that cap space for other than pay ridiculously overs on a player.

Like if you can get the deal done for 1.5 why spend an extra 200k a season if you don't need to. It's not a case of if you don't use it you lose it. It's a case of you save 200k in actual money a season.

Because Saints have been embarrassed by making massive plays at many top line free agents and never landing any, they didn’t want to risk that happening again so the offer has to be so extreme the player can’t possibly knock them back and that the existing club won’t go close to matching.

TDK being the player is largely irrelevant, but once they identified him as their target the Saints could not afford to miss.

Happy for him to go to StKilda for the money and only them. Then we can sit back and enjoy the ride. ;)

Butters would be great but he would cost multiple first rounders in trade , for a rebuilding club that’s not something we can afford to do!

Marshall for a second rounder you can’t actually be serious when you say that surely? You gave us more for Rhys Stanley ffs

We gave pick 21 and Rhys wasn't 30 at the time.

Butters is exactly the kind of player your midfield could do with.

Any team could. He's an exceptional player.

First rounders are overrated.

You already know what you're getting with him, no idea if the player taken with the pick reaches that elite level.

Sure if Butters was available to them but he is not and has significant offers from multiple clubs that are already in a premiership window.

You can only get a player thats available to your club and Butters is not to St Kilda and TDK is and looks like his head has been turned and expected to leave if he is not re signed in the next 4-5 weeks

Forget about age marshal has 3-4 years of absolute elite football left and 1000% times the player Stanley is . What is it with Geelong always expecting to get every player for peanuts how about paying fair value for a change

I don’t see much if any difference in level of ability between TDK and Marshall.

Blows my mind a bit that they are gonna get him when they already have a star there. What would Marshall be worth on the market

Marshall is older, better as a forward, and not really a great ruck if you actually watch him play.

I don't see TDK as the ideal candidate for us to chase via free agency, but there aren't exactly many others that we have a shot at.

What about all the FA mids that are available ?!

Marshall has shown ability to work in a two-ruck setup as he is capable of playing forward.
Another thing that many are failing to consider is the impact TDK joining the saints will have on Marshall's longevity.
He has been asked to do a power of work over his career, often paying hurt as we had little other option as our backup rucks have not been up to the level.
TDK and Marshall playing in the same team could very well extend Marshall's career.
