first off, congrats to Tom, a good clubman and a good leader, but fair dinkum this is a terrible decision by the GFC.
What's the point of swapping one injury prone captain for another? King lost the job, not because he was crap leader but because he couldn't get his body right... why shift the same burden onto another player with an aging body.
I completely disagree with the idea that you have to be a certain age to be a captain. Wayne Carey and Stephen Kernahan both got the top job at a young age and they were both something of a success... The club had a chance to be bold and appoint a player like Chapman, who just bleeds blue and white and presents himself very well. He's young, a natural leader and would grow into the role. Realistically he could hold down the job for the next six years and really leave his mark. Instead the club have been weak and appointed a bloke who has the same deficiences as his predecessor.
I'm only 22 years old but I can't think of one Geelong captain from the last 20 odd years who I'd regard as a great leader in the same vein as Steven Gerrard, Michael Voss or Buckley.
In 12 months, the fans will be sticking it to Harley the same way they've given it to King over the last few years and the club will be in the same position it is now. One step forward, three steps back, I guess that's true to Geelong form.
Very disappointed.
