Put aside the fact that Harley has retired and Maxwell is at the peak of his powers. Compare them as if they are both at their peak.

Harley was liked by almost all footy fans, while Maxwell seems to be hated by most people except for Collingwood fans.

Both were far from the best player in the side, but both possessed terrific leadership on the field. I find it hard to split the two in terms of both playing ability and leadership.

Who would you pick first?

I'm a Pies supporter & I love Maxy, I think he provides outstanding leadership as the captain of the Pies. I reckon Harley and Maxwell are pretty much equal in terms of leadership, but Harley was a better player in pure football terms.

I'm still very happy with Maxy as our skipper.

Tom Harley was a seriously good footballer until injuries cruelled his last 2 or 3 years.

Geelong built their premiership run on the foundations of Harley and Scarlett.

All im going to say is my collingwood mates even think maxwell is no good

Incomparable IMO. Without the captaincy Maxwell would be borderline 22 whilst Harley was an absolute gun and would have been among the first picked every week anyways.

Troy Luff >>>>>Zac Dawson >>>>Maxwell

I'll take Harley because he is a good commentator and I agree with his stance on vitamin supplements.

To be fair, I think you're being a bit hard on Troy Luff

I would go Harley just. Still for a "borderline 22" player Maxwell has done okay. Never been dropped in his career, AA selection, 2x Coll best finals player, a second in the B&F and multiple top 10 finishes etc etc

Yep that sounds like a typical "borderline 22" resume

Harley's playing abilities being majorly talked up in this thread. Good ordinary player, who played his part as a cog in the Geelong defence. A defence that probably was better than Collingwood's but like Collingwood was helped by a dominant midfield. In terms of ability I actually don't think he's that far ahead, if at all of Maxwell. Put him in a bottom 8 side and I think he would have been just an average defender. No one was talking about Tom Harley prior to 2007. Leadership was exemplary though.

Maxwell a great leader and captain but hasn't got much to offer in playing ability.
Harley also has got great leading abilities but has got an edge over Maxwell in playing ability.

So Harley for me but wouldn't argue if someone puts Maxwell higher in leading ability.
I'm not saying Harley was a bad leader but Maxwell is a bit better at leading.
