Jesus, that is the Matty Egan bone.

Can we catch a break? Kingy started this ridiculous chain of big man injuries. Harley missed half of the last few years, Egan is gone, Brown has barely started, S Simpson lost out after his ankle, Ottens is Ottens, Hawkins' hot spots keep putting him back. Lonergan lost a vital organ. Drum's eye got detached.

But hey, Blake is always there :D

Mooney has been durable. The one we did not want to lose, so you could say we've been lucky really. What a fantastic servent he has been.

This sounds minor but very untimely given his form.

Let's be a bit upbeat guys. Larkins said on MMM that he was likely to be back after the bye, as will Ottens and Scarlett. And Ling will be back next week.

The unsettling news was that the injuries to Corey and Rooke were still a concern with no return date in sight.

Bomber Thompson said:
Thompson was unsure what path the club would take with Hawkins, who he said could have easily played this week.
"There's definitely no fractures there, but there is a hot spot," he said. "Last time he had sore feet he had hot spots in both feet, so he's sort of just got one of those bodies that's got hot spots in it.
"We're really not sure which way we're going to go, whether he's going to continue to play next week or have next week off and come back after the bye.
"We just want to gather more information and decide what the right course of action is to take."

Re: Hawkins - foot soreness

First reaction of mine on Saturday was that he'd done something bad:

It was my first thought too. I actually thought it looked like a foot injury immediately.

I smell a rat in what Bomber said yesterday-I'm not saying he's deliberately lying, but I am saying it doesn't make sense. A hot spot in a foot (i.e. early signs of a stress facture) is not an injury that can be solved in a week with intensive physiotherapy etc. It is an overloading injury which requires complete backing off with the player so it certainly takes more than a week or two to get back. As when young Cunnington had it in the pre season, he had to go in a moon boot for 2-3 weeks, and then slowly build his training back up.

So I'm not thinking the worst (i.e. Tomahawk gone for season) but I definitely don't think he'll be back next week or the week after that. Happy to be proved wrong, but I doubt I will be.

egan had a real fracture, came off immediately , has never run since.. this is a different injury for hawk, he's had them before, they are the best at managing these injuries at geelong, he will not be another egan

We are desperate for the split round, injury toll is getting insane.

Ottens, Hawkins, Rooke, Corey, Ling, Scarlett, JPod... that is a decent portion of our spine out of action.

Corey and Rooke are the only concerns in that group of players you've listed.

There seems to be serious doubt over wether Rooke will play again this year and Joel Corey's knee is more serious than they first thought - hopefully the 2nd operation fixed the problem.

JPOD is minor - Ling back this week - Scarlett and Ottens wrapped in cotton wool - and Hawkins they're taking it very conservatively and a break for a few weeks will freshen him up nicely. Taking all this into account we've got to round 11 with a 9-2 record .... tell me you would'nt have taken that at the start of the year. We're basically 2 games clear if you consider we're 4 points and whopping percentage clear. We've just about got a spot inside the top 4 in the bank and there's no other side at this stage looks like causing a real headache.

Imagine the other clubs looking at where we sit now - and the players to come back, and not scratching their heads over how they bridge the gap?

I've just seen Bombers weekly media conference on big pond video and I'm beginning to think that things are pretty ominous with the Hawks injury. By the sounds of it, they are going to sit down with his manager and parents and let them decide if he should take the risk in playing. Maybe he has got a chronic problem in his foot that may end his career if it fractures which is a real possibility?

I wonder if his work in the ruck has brought it on now?

Obviously the Matthew Egan experience has made the club very gun shy about these sort of situations. Think what may have happened if he didn't try and train to get back in the '07 GF side.

I'd be interested in other opinion of what Bomber says.

Rest him up.. Don't want to see another Egan.. take as much time off as he could for mine..hopefully he is right for Finals..

The way Ch 9 reported it, the club will sit down with Hawk, his manager and family to decide what course of action to take in the short term. He can have surgery that will effectively end his season or play on with the knowledge that he can develop stress fractures that could be career threatening.

Will be interesting to see what the decision is. Hopefully with a month or so rest the hot spot will die down and he'll be back before the finals.

Either way, JPod looks like he has booked a finals spot

Well if that is the dilemma, then as difficult as it would be, the decision would have to be to pull the pin on the season.

At his age, it would be in his and the club's best interest minimise the risk. And if that means surgery and ending his 2010 season, then so be it.

Having said all of that, it's incredibly gutting. I feel for the boy.:(
