MRP / Trib. Tom Hawkins "made an example of" - accepts 1 match suspension

Yet it took the player off the ground, retching, while the other immediately played on?

I get your point re: Hawkins emotions, but the over policing of the game is frustrating for me.

Guys will be out on the field in suits soon.
All Geelong players should know better given our recent history with indiscretions, whether minor or not.

We've been on the rough end of the stick more often than not but this is clearly not one of those occasions given players were put on notice 3 weeks ago.

It's just a really dumb act from a player who should know better, and that's regardless of what Jones or any other player have previously done.

Let's hope he takes his medicine and learns to control his emotions next time he's put in a similar situation or he'll let the team down again.

Actually no. Wasn't Zac Jones?
Read @Nakias post a few up. Not even close to the same thing.
The closest to the Hawkins incident was Cotchin.......but so what?
I repeat what I said earlier. "How stupid do you have to be to jumper punch a player after the AFL told everyone they were going to crack down on it"
Hawkins is responsible for HIS actions...... comparing them to anyone else's is just false equivalency

If insufficient force leaves you vomiting, what does sufficient force do?

Rhetorical question.
You get the rare chance of wearing your testicles as earrings for a start.

Don't have any problem with him getting a week. Knew he would the moment I saw it. Cotchin should have gotten suspended too, yep, but the afl only made a fuss after that incident. He got him high, he has form, he knew they were no longer going to tolerate it. Cop his right whack and move on. Perhaps direct that aggression into, I dunno, leading more for the ball, instead of stupid wrestling.

He's not letting the team down.
He's decided to have an extra week off to give Wylie Buzza a go at AFL level.
Very selfless thing to do from Tommy what a man.

Havent read the thread bar the last page - but 1 week is fair - he had to go - otherwise MRPwould have no credability at all

Dont know if its already been mentioned but Tom did hit Stratton flush on the chin in that final and escaped penalty i dont know how - so hes had a reasonable run

Gives Black or Stanley a chance at full forward - important game for either of those 2 if they get the nod

The MRP has credibility anyhow??

Interesting concept.

Was never in doubt,
As I said earlier if he had done it a month ago he would have gotten off.
but it was his own fault for putting himself in that position, especially given the talk and focus on it of late.
Why do you say this? I can't see how its true. He did it a year ago and didn't get off.

He has a target on his back.

Mate, I played local footy where you could get away with throwing punches and doing damage ... the AFL clearly doesn't tolerate the same style of thuggery.

It's simple ... the players were warned about jumper punches and Hawkins couldn't control his emotions and transgressed, so he pays the price.

Plenty of players come in to fly the flag for a teammate but often none are suspended because they choose to push and shove or wrestle rather than throw a right jab while grabbing onto the jumper.

It really isn't hard to get your head around whether you deem it soft or not. The league decided to make a stand and try and rid the cheap shot from the game and Hawkins couldn't control himself. It says more about him than me or anyone else.

If it was important enough for the afl to make a stand on this it was important enough that they could have done so in february.

I don't disagree hawkins is at fault but if i did my job the way the afl do theirs i would be unemployed. Their incompetence is staggering.

I don't disagree with that sentiment regarding the AFL at all. They are corrupt.

Tom made a mistake.

He was always likely to get a week considering the current climate.

He didn't "digress" - look up the meaning of this word.

The MRP, the AFL (and the 'independent panel that found *EFC had no case to answer) are notoriously inconsistent, self-centered and even corrupt.

I think the MRP made a category mistake with this Hawkins incident. It was actually insufficient force, and should have been let go.

We should wear it, but not forget it.

the afl is worried by head high contact
selwood is targeted on 3 occasions and yet no action is taken
hawkins supports his skipper, and is the only player suspended for a jumper punch

for the do gooders its this simple

vicroads only keep penalise you for crossing the road when the light is amber
they threaten everyone, and have seen numerous people doing this, but you are the only one penalised

yup

afl is corrupt - f off

Because he went last year and the outrage caused every player since to get away with it.

There is no conspiracy theory or Geelong bias,

But the problem for Tom is that after they basically conceeded he was stiff last time, players have been pushing and pushing the line... and the media have been whipping this jumper punch thing into a frenzy.

Tom was stupid (or unfortunate if you want to look at it that way) enough to do it this week when it has been at peak overhype so he pays the price.
